Valerie Gonzalez addresses this lacuna by exploring the operations of cross-fertilization at the level of imagistic conceptualization resulting from the multifaceted encounter between the local legacy of Indo-Persianate book art, the freshly imported Persian models to Mughal India after 1555 and the influx of European art at the Mughal court in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The author's close examination of the visuality, metaphysical order and aesthetic language of Mughal imagery and portraiture sheds new light on this particular aspect of its aesthetic hybridity, which is usually approached monolithically as a historical phenomenon of cross-cultural interaction. That approach fails to consider specific parameters and features inherent to the artistic practice, such as the differences between doxis and praxis, conceptualization and realization, intentionality and what lies beyond it. By studying the distinct phases and principles of hybridization between the variegated pictorial sources at work in the Mughal creative process at the successive levels of the project/intention, the practice/realization and the result/product, the author deciphers the modalities of appropriation and manipulation of the heterogeneous elements. A man was not a slave by nature or by law, as Aristotle claimed. His freedom was a function of his moral state. A man had as many masters as he had vices. This insight would provide the basis for the most sophisticated form of social control known to man.

Fourteen hundred years later, a decadent French aristocrat turned that tradition on its head when he wrote that "the freest of people are they who are most friendly to murder." Like St. Augustine, the Marquis de Sade would agree that freedom was a function of morals. Unlike St. Augustine, Sade proposed a revolution in sexual morals to accompany the political revolution then taking place in France. Libido Dominandi – the term is taken from Book I of Augustine’s City of God – is the definitive history of that sexual revolution, from 1773 to the present.

Unlike the standard version of the sexual revolution, Libido Dominandi shows how sexual liberation was from its inception a form of control. Those who wished to liberate man from the moral order needed to impose social controls as soon as they succeeded because liberated libido led inevitably to anarchy. Aldous Huxley wrote in his preface to the 1946 edition of Brave New World that "as political and economic freedom diminishes, sexual freedom tends compensatingly to increase." This book is about the converse of that statement. It explains how the rhetoric of sexual freedom was used to engineer a system of covert political and social control. Over the course of the two-hundred-year span covered by this book, the development of technologies of communication, reproduction, and psychic control – including psychotherapy, behaviorism, advertising, sensitivity training, pornography, and plain old blackmail – allowed the Enlightenment and its heirs to turn Augustine’s insight on its head and create masters out of men’s vices. Libido Dominandi is the story of how that happened.

Casualties of the sexual revolution

The thesis of E. Michael Jones's "Libido Dominandi" is that, far from really liberating anyone, "sexual liberation" has served to deliver powerful means of social and political manipulation and control into the hands of our ruling �lite. He marshals some impressive evidence. Here we read about Edward Bernays, Sigmund Freud's nephew and the founding father of the public relations industry, who was among the first to realize how sexual imagery could be employed in advertising. Long before the infamous "Virginia Slims" ad campaign, Bernays used the suggestion that cigarette smoking was an act of feminist independence to sell Lucky Strikes to women. Here we see the origins of the Planned Parenthood organization in the hope that birth control and abortion would reduce the numbers of the poor (especially ethnic Catholics and blacks), and resolve the dilemma of the welfare state. Here we learn of the fraudulent methodology of sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, the sordid character of much of his "research," and the way in which Kinsey manipulated his academic superiors and his chief sources of funding through an implicit threat of blackmail, because these people had been foolish enough to give him their "sexual histories." The r�le of the Rockefeller Foundation in both the Planned Parenthood and Kinsey enterprises was motivated by the obsaession of John D. Rockefeller III with eugenics, the pseudo-science of "race improvement." We learn also of the profound antipathy of the eugenicists and sex researchers towards Roman Catholicism, which they viewed as their principal adversary. Jones exposes the origins of "Americans United for the Separation of Church and State" in the anti-Catholic bigotry of Paul Blanshard. The organizations described here present a fa�ade of respectability to the public that would not be so easy for them to maintain if their backgrounds were better publicized.
Jones's case would be more persuasive had this book come under a firmer editorial hand. It is lengthy, but also repetitive. Some material is duplicated almost verbatim in several parts of the book; also, Jones repeats, again almost verbatim, material from his other books, "Dionysos Rising," "Decadent Moderns," and "Monsters from the Id." This book might have been cut to half its length with as good or better effect than it now has. The work also fails in its efforts to tie the all-too-genuine mischief wrought by the sexual revolution together as the result of some sort of "Illuminist" conspiracy. Jones is a Roman Catholic polemicist of the old-fashioned type, for whom no Roman prelate (at least before Vatican II) ever did wrong, and no Protestant ever did right. He writes with the vehemence of a pamphleteer in the time of the sixteenth-century French wars of religion, and would probably have been perfectly happy under the patronage of the third duke of Guise. While many conservative Catholics, his intended audience, will be undisturbed by this tone, it is likely to put off many others who might otherwise be interested in Jones's factual reportage and sympathetic to his conclusions. This is unfortunate, since both deserve to be more widely known.

I am an older RN student changing careers into nursing. Before class and clinicals I didnt have much exposure to hospitals so it takes me a little longer to learn and get acquainted with the material and where to look for it. In clinicals this book is helpful in giving me an overview that includes a description of the disease/diagnosis, the pathophysiology, causes, Risk factors (which you can use to help you pick a risk for NANDA), Incidence which tells you what part of the body can have affects or perhaps if it is more in men or women, a common characteristics section (i.e. tenderness, pain, erythema, warmth, edema...) complications (i.e. sepsis, DVT, progressions of cellulitis...), what to assess for (i.e. fever, chills, warmth and tenderness of the skin...) physical findings, test results i.e. what lab results to look for (helpful when doing your care plans later and you are relating your labs to your patient), and treatments with a medication section that lists the classes of drugs most commonly used, and surgery. There is also a Nursing Considerations section with a goal or "key outcomes" section (pt goals), a nursing interventions section (general more like nonpharmacologic like raising HOB 30 degrees), a "monitoring" section with items to monitor like pain, vitals, and edema. And lastly, a pt teaching section that has discharge planning listed (these 4 sections are really helpful to follow when choosing your interventions for your care plan as they really keep you on track). As one of the reviews stated this is all on a 2 page format that looks very similar to their davis drug book layout, but with all of it laid out in bulleted lists. Other students were ordering their own after they saw mine. The soft cover is laminated too which makes it easy to wipe off. I will absolutely be using this not just for school but after as well when I start working. This really helped me to improve my care while in clinicals and increase comprehension when doing my care plans. Because this has 460 diseases/conditions listed it would have been great if they had a "Possible NANDA section" like the Tabers dictionary has for each disease they list in the back but alas something to improve on, and maybe will be in later editions.

The best book to buy for nursing students! a lifesaver :)

I wish I had found this book earlier in my nursing studies. Of all the of books I have bought while in nursing school, this is my absolute favorite! It's loaded full of information, but in an incredibly easy format to use. Each disease is on only 2 pages, so no page turning. It's right there in front of you, categorized perfect with all the pertinent information needed in nursing and in school right down to goals and interventions. My only regret is how much money I spent before finding this book on other books to help me get thru nursing school. It will go with me everywhere for the remainder of school and my career! I also like that it's not a hardcover, but not a soft cover either. It's a sturdier soft cover type material which makes it easy to carry and doesn't add much to the weight of my backpack when going to and from places. If you're in nursing school, you know what I mean.
I give this book 5 stars!

EXCELLENT Resource!

I used this book while in nursing school, and continue to use this as a resource. Currently, I work in a hospital clinic. It covers illnesses in all domains- med-surg, pediatrics, OB/GYN and psych. When I float to clinics I am not that familiar with, I bring this book, along with the Quick Check Diagnostic Tests book. Am able to fully explain to the patient what is going on. Can refamiliarize myself with conditions I studied in school. Is a win-win!
