Pretty good guide book

Pretty good guide book. I bought this book in the airport before I went to visit family in the Netherlands. I have visited the Netherlands three times before and thought for my fourth trip that I should finally get a guide book to find some "hidden" places. I read this book mostly on the train and it was interesting and informative. Some of the destinations were overhyped(Hoge Veluwe national park), but the rest of the book was accurate and interesting. In the end, leave some of the destinations to your own discretion and do some research outside of the book for places you'd like to go.
The biggest benefit this book provided me was directions to destinations. I usually didn't have internet, so having this book on hand was a lifesaver.

Sumeet Banerji is the author of Ice Party. Most of the book was written in an apartment on top of a tunnel in San Francisco. Some parts of it were also written in Bangalore, where he grew up.

Serving suggestion: best consumed thoughtfully with mushrooms

I am lucky enough to own a first-run copy of this book. To give some context to the greater project that was Ice Party, the author actually ran a Kickstarter to fund its design and production and oversaw the entire process himself. The cover’s jacket sites that letterpress and digital printing techniques were used; certain features were also added by hand. The jacket itself has a golden shimmer like the back of some iPhones, along with the image of a “Chakravuha labyrinth”; the hardcover is a very pleasing and understated grey/blue like the button-up chambray shirts of baristas. Put simply it looks really cool and serves as a beautiful testament to the creative process. You’d definitely want to be seen reading it at your local coffee shop.

What’s it about?

Ice Party is a highly enjoyable adventure spanning several geographic planes and at least as many spiritual ones. The main character Charles has a certain charm and innocence that belies the depth of his curiosity and philosophical ponderances. One minute he’s unintentionally poisoning himself with the mushrooms he just hunted and the next he’s affirming that the story about the apple falling on Newton’s head is a made up fable about how we don’t understand the true origin of ideas.

One could say the impetus for Charles’s adventure is his attraction for hot girls (it’s a recurring theme, I’m happy to say). Along the way we meet a cast of otherworldly characters who help move the narrative forward into ever deeper metaphysical waters. At a certain point the reader, like Charles, may become unsure of what is actually happening and what is a dream. Charles and friends go out to watch the big budget Godzilla movie soon after discussing the potential for uploading human consciousness onto mushrooms. There is a stroll through a supermall and racing around a mansion between an Aston Martin and a Rolls-Royce.

Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this book. It’s as thought-provoking as it is hilarious, entertaining as it spiritually nourishing. Thank you Sumeet Banerji for a welcome contribution to the world of written word!

A professional editor and translator, Peter de Jong has collaborated on numerous modern history and aviation history books and written dozens of magazine articles since 1995. His comprehensive volumes on the most historically significant Fokker aircraft of World War 2, the D.XXI, appeared in his native Dutch and French, and with Kari Stenman he produced Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces 112 - Fokker D.XXI Aces of World War 2. The author lives in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Excellent treatment of a rare subject

At first look, most Osprey readers will wonder "What in the world?" Why would Osprey devote a Combat Aircraft title to a relatively obscure flying boat?

Well, I'm glad that Osprey did. Clearly the publisher knows its market, as both the Combat Aircraft and the Aces Aircraft series were aimed at modelers, and it's surprising how many kits have been produced of the Do. 24. A quick glance at Google Images shows at least half a dozen, testament both to the type's operational record and its aesthetic appeal.

Peter de Jong clearly knows his subject, as he provides detailed descriptions of the 24's design and development as well as its use by Germany, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, and others. In that regard, the Dornier was used by Allied, Axis, and neutral nations during WW II. Though fewer than 300 were produced, final Spanish service apparently lasted until the late 1960s, a tribute to the type's longevity.

Most of the text understandably addresses Luftwaffe service, including little-known covert operations in the Mediterranean and Baltic arenas. But there's an excellent chapter on Dutch use in Europe and the Pacific, with detailed descriptions of successes and losses.

Typical of the publisher's series, this volume has more than 70 good to excellent quality photos plus 30 of color profiles by veteran Osprey illustrator Chris Davey. The unusual schemes shown for French and Spanish aircraft undoubtedly will attract modelers everywhere.

Finally, two appendices provide a handy reference for historians interested in the ten German and eight Netherlands units that flew the graceful trimotor seaplane.

Saving lives...

The Dornier Do 24 flying boat had an enviable record as a search and rescue aircraft during the Second World War, snatching thousands of downed aviators and shipwrecked sailors from various seas and oceans under combat conditions. As author Peter de Jong points out, the Do 24 served both sides and several countries during the conflict.

"Dornier Do 24 Units" is an Osprey Combat Aircraft Series book, recapturing the history of the airframe. The introduction describes their first combat use in 1940 as part of a German airlift of personnel and supplies into Narvik in North Norway, but their first buyer was actually the Dutch Navy, which bought several squadrons worth of aircraft for use in the Netherlands East Indies. The Dutch squadrons would perform courageously against the onslaught of the Japanese invasion in 1941. A handful of the surviving aircraft would reach Australia, for use by that country.

Only after developing a widespread need for search and rescue at sea would Germany decide to use the Do 24. Do 24 squadrons would work the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the Black Sea, and even the Arctic over the course of the war. The text provides details about the exploits of each operational squadron. The narrative is supported by an impressive selection of period photographs and some excellent illustrations by Chris Davey, including a variety of "type" templates. This book shines a fascinating light on a largely forgotten aspect of the Second World War, including the heroism of the aircrews and the impressive numbers of lives they saved. Highly recommended to aviation buffs and to students of the Second World War.

Easy read and enjoyable

Dornier DO-24 units is an interesting book on this aircraft it provides development history and operational history. The units that operated this type of air craft is also covered in detail from formation to deactivation. After reading the reader gets to see what this aircraft contributed to the war effort and the many long range reconnaissance this aircraft did before being retired. Easy read and enjoyable

Tim Blanning is Professor of Modern European History at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He is also a Fellow of the British Academy. Because, as a "senior" physician, he is no more likely to allow a superfluous, if expensive, technology to get in the way of his hands-on method of diagnosis than he is to let so trifling a thing as a fact hinder a good yarn. The way he tells it, truth does not suffer facts. And Conger's truth doesn't suffer at all. In this follow-up to his first memoir on practicing in rural Vermont, Harvard Medical School graduate Conger moves from the farm to inner-city Philadelphia, where he treats patients who struggle for food, shelter, and safety. After five years, he returns to the isolated rural community of Dummerston, Vermont. Conger describes humorous encounters with various offbeat patients; on the more serious side, he reflects on problems of our healthcare system. The author now teaches at Dartmouth Medical School.

About the Author

Beach Conger, M.D., was born in 1941 in New York City and grew up in Pleasantville, N.Y. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1967 and did his training in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital and the University of California San Francisco. From 1969 to 1971 he was an offer in the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the CDC. From 1977 to 2001, he practiced general internal medicine at Mt. Ascutney Hospital in Windsor, Vermont. He then spent five years teaching hospital medicine at Medical College of Pennsylvanvia and Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, serving as chief of hospital medicine at the latter institution. In 2006 he returned to Vermont to practice in Windsor. He is a member of the Dartmouth Medical School faculty, where he precepts medical students in their primary care rotations.

Humorous Allegories About A Small Town Medical Practice

I found this to be a delightful and humorous account of the life of typical small town medical doctor facing real everyday problems, not the hectic and dramatic but totally false events shown in movie or TV medical dramas. The author tells his story as sort of the Marcus Welby, MD of the fictional town of Dumster, VT which is a stand in for Windsor, VT. The good doctor appears to be a rather self-deprecating person, although learned having graduated from Harvard Medical School, and later worked at UC Berkeley Hospital system,Grady in Atlanta, Temple in Philadelphia plus being an adjunct professor at Dartmouth. I see the author as sort of Garrison Keillor transplanted to Vermont.

But let me say that I agree with some of the other reviewers that the chosen names for some of the characters in these allegorical sketches do get a bit grating after a while. Some examples are Paul and Melinda Barker-Purris for the husband and wife vet team, Muriel Goode and Olive Best for the spinster sisters who lived together for so many years that you couldn't tell them apart, plus too many others to mention, but you get the idea. However, all that aside, they are but minor points in the entirety of what the author has to say, and I think he says it quite well. The book is really a series of homilies and even a soliloquy or two thrown in for good measure; there is a strong moral perspective throughout. The writing is humorous without being of the belly laugh variety, but more of a humorous bent. My favorite chapter came late in the book and was called AMERICANITIS, in which the author tries to explain to a hypochondriacal patient how the psychiatric/psychological disorder/symptom of neurasthenia has morphed into the more modern term Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

You won't roll on the floor laughing, but I think most people will enjoy the humor without any four-letter words used, and may actually see what life for a small town doctor is really like. A similar book but with individual accounts from a myriad of practitioners in various locales that I also thoroughly enjoyed was THE COUNTRY DOCTOR REVISITED edited by Therese Zink, MD.

Taking The Long Way Home

Dr Beach Conger writes about his life as a physician, the people he treats and the communities he lives in. He is disparaging of medical centers and specialists in particular. He prefers to be in control of the kind of medicine he practices, and that is the philosophy of most physicians. But, this is the modern times, like it or not, and it seems Dr Conger is not going to change even a little bit with the times.

Dr Conger and wife moved from California to Vermont after reading a year or two of 'Vermont Life'. This seemed to be the area that fit them the best. Dr Conger wanted to practice medicine the 'real way', and his wife wanted to go to Law School. All was happy for several years until Dr Conger and his wife decided they wanted to work in the big city for awhile. They chose Philadelphia and this was not a wise choice, none of the old 'only one physician' in charge here. Dr Conger didn't quite fit in. Back to Vermont where stories of his patients are told through semi-factual characters. Dr Conger, though self deprecating at times, seems to know the answer to all that is wrong with the medical profession these days. Those stories get very old for the reader. This is not the charming tale of a country physician and his Vermont patients, but more a practicum of his philosophy of what medical practice should be. Not an enjoyable read.

Was anticipating a series of amusing stories, and they just weren't there. Lot of political position statements made, and I did agree fully with many of them; but just could stick with the story. Was bored, bored and finally just bailed. It did not entertain me enough to try and finish it.
