About the Author

James K. Wight received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering from Michigan State University in 1969 and 1970, respectively, and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1973. He has been a professor of structural engineering in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Michigan since 1973. He teaches undergraduate and graduate classes on analysis and design of reinforced concrete structures. He is well known for his work in earthquake-resistant design of concrete structures and spent a one-year sabbatical leave in Japan where he was involved in the construction and simulated earthquake testing of a full-scale reinforced concrete building. Professor Wight has been an active member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) since 1973 and was named a Fellow of the Institute in 1984. He is a Past-President of ACI and a past Chair of the ACI Building Code Committee 318. He is also past Chair of the ACI Technical Activities Committee and Committee 352 on Joints and Connections in Concrete Structures. He has received several awards from the American Concrete Institute including the Delmar Bloem Distinguished Service Award (1991), the Joe Kelly Award (1999), the Boise Award (2002), the C.P. Siess Structural Research Award (2003 and 2009), the Alfred Lindau Award (2008) the Wason Medal (2012) and the Charles S. Whitney Medal (2015). Professor Wight has received numerous awards for his teaching and service at the University of Michigan including the ASCE Student Chapter Teacher of the Year Award, the College of Engineering Distinguished Service Award, the College of Engineering Teaching Excellence Award, the Chi Epsilon-Great Lakes District Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Rackham Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award. He has also received Distinguished Alumnus Awards from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Departments of the University of Illinois (2008) and Michigan State University (2009).

Hard to beat

This is a terrific book. Wight is at the top of his field, having chaired the committee (318) that writes and maintains the code for structural concrete, and having taught the subject for many years. The book was originally written by James MacGregor, and was excellent then. It has only improved (and been updated to match the new organization of the 2014 code) since Wight took it on. It contains many examples, so serves well students who are learning the subject, and it is goes into sufficient depth to be useful to life-long professionals as well.

If it was possible to rate this textbook 0 starts I would. It is the most circuitous textbooks I have ever had the displeasure of reading. I do not recommend this textbook to those who are new to reinforced concrete design.

Great Historical Analysis of Urban Snipers

In John West's work, Fry The Brain, he argues that the urban sniper is a critical component to a successful urban guerilla movement. He supports his assertion by arguing that a snipers impact on the morale of the opposing force far exceeds the number of enemy Soldiers he actually engages. West then goes on to further suggest that a sniper can elicit an over response from his enemy which subsequently allows the urban guerilla movement to leverage the media to influence international opinion. Ultimately West firmly establishes his position that a snipers value far exceeds the necessary investment in training and equipment.

Fry the Brain is a long book that really takes an extensive look at the role and impact of the urban sniper through the lens of numerous urban conflicts from Stalingrad in World War II, to the current conflict in Iraq. His historical analysis are absolutely outstanding in general, and provide an excellent foundation for his subsequent discussion concerning the role of the sniper in each battle. West's examination of each conflict is accomplished through an examination of the tactics, and equipment employed by the urban sniper in each of the contingencies, usually through an analysis of a specific sniper or sniper operation. In each case study West focuses on the challenges of infiltration, signature minimization, exfiltration, and the psychological impact of the sniper after the target(s) were serviced. Where ever possible West quantifies the number of sniper related casualties, and subsequently works to extrapolate through various indicators their ultimate impact at the operational level of the conflict.

West expands his examination of the urban sniper by also reviewing the snipers tools of the trade, and modern counter sniper tactics, and technology. It's obvious that West has an affinity for firearms, which isn't surprising since he himself served as a U.S. Army Special Forces Soldier for 22 years. His review of potential sniper weapons and equipment is unfortunately disappointing, not so much as a result of what he chose to examine, but because of technical mistakes that shouldn't have been made by an author with his credentials. The two most frustrating mistakes that he made throughout the book were his reference to suppressing a revolver, and the employment of exploding bullets.

West is absolutely enamored with the concept of the suppressed firearm. His arguments concerning the benefits of the snipers employment of a suppressed weapon are compelling, but on more than one occasion he specifically suggests the employment of a suppressed revolver. With only a few model specific exceptions (Nagant Revolver), revolvers cannot be effectively suppressed due to the gap between the cylinder and the barrel. If West had specified that a revolver be suppressed to conceal the muzzle flash his argument would be more valid, but he clearly indicates the purpose of the suppressor as to reduce the sound signature of the weapon when fired. Additionally considering the amount of time spent discussing weapon suppression, it would have been appropriate to add a decibel examination to the discussion, to quantify the effect of modern suppressors when used in conjunction with a standard semi-automatic firearm.

West `s suggestion that `exploding' bullets be used to minimize the forensic signature of the sniper is particularly disappointing. West would lead the reader to believe that there is a small caliber round filled with explosives that detonates on contact. That round simply does not exist. What West is probably referring to is a frangible round that essentially disintegrates when it meets a medium denser than itself. Frangible rounds are commonly used in indoor ranges to reduce the potential of ricochets. The frangible round would meet all the forensic aspects of West's assertion, short of his suggestion that `exploding' rounds were used by Kennedy's assassins. In the case of Kennedy's assassination, West suggests that the round that penetrated the front windshield of the president's car, and subsequently struck him in the throat was an `exploding' round. By his own analysis the round should have exploded on impact with the windshield and would have never made it to the president.

Overall the book is a great review of the historical impact of the sniper in the urban environment. A more well versed editor would have caught and addressed the issues concerning the suppression of a revolver, and the reference to exploding bullets. Those errors are really minor detractors from an otherwise very good book. West's analysis of urban sniper tactics is unparalleled and provides a one source reference for the counter insurgency professional working against the modern urban sniper. Ultimately West firmly establishes his position that a snipers value far exceeds his quantitative impact on the battlefield.

Exceptional work on unconventional sniping

Fry the Brain is a comprehensive and revealing look at urban guerrilla sniping, one of the most notorious and least understood disciplines of insurgent warfare. Sniping is a precision tool used by insurgents to surgically target individuals without causing collateral damage. As West notes, "the embodiment of urban guerrilla warfare is the sniper, a lone individual who moves among the people." Snipers use their surroundings to their advantage, taking their shot, then disappearing into the population. Resistance movements and insurgencies of all shades and stripes have made use of the guerrilla sniper.

For many, the quintessential image of a sniper is a young, fit male who is professionally trained, wears a ghillie suit and fires from extreme distances with a high-powered rifle that has an equally high-powered scope. West proves, in case-study after case-study, that not only is this caricature an inaccurate portrayal of the most predominant sniping campaigns and the most prolific snipers, but also that this conventional, rural-centric mindset is often a poor fit and even counterproductive for applications in modern urban guerrilla warfare.

West breaks the mold of the conventionally-minded construct of a sniper and offers a paradigm-shifting perspective on the insurgent tactic of sniping. Fry the Brain shows that some of the most effective snipers had no formal equipment or training and were self-taught. Vassili Zaitsev, World War II's most famous sniper, began his career as a payroll clerk in the Russian navy before he learned how to shoot while fighting the German army in Stalingrad. The French resistance and the Russian army in World War II, Bosnians in Sarajevo, and guerrillas in Chechnya all frequently used women snipers because they could move about with less scrutiny from security forces. Further breaking the conventional construct, West demonstrates how small caliber rifles and even modified pistols have been effectively used in urban sniping campaigns at distances much shorter than those in a rural setting-- some as close as 50 meters.

West walks the reader through every major sniper campaign, from World War II to present-day Iraq. He also includes detailed accounts of some of the most infamous and sensational one-time sniper events, including the assassination of President Kennedy and the Washington, D.C., snipers. West contrasts the differences between guerrilla sniping and conventional sniping, including the need for anonymity, the constraints on freedom of movement, the need for absolute secrecy and the requirement for physical dissociation between the sniper and the weapon after taking the shot. Fry the Brain also includes a wealth of technical data on classic and modern weapon systems, and on new counter-sniping technology. He also presents an interesting discussion and analysis on the use of forensics as a measure for defeating snipers, as well as how snipers frequently use counter-forensics to maintain deniability and evade suspicion and capture.

West also discusses the psychology behind sniping and sniping's effect on the enemy. Of particular interest is his assessment that modern armies tend to be extremely vulnerable to this asymmetrical threat. Because conventional militaries are heavily invested in the traditional concept of warfare, West says, there tends to be a basic lack of understanding among leaders and experts in the field about insurgent movements. This often leaves soldiers ill-prepared or equipped to deal with snipers, leading to clumsy overreactions, collateral damage and, ultimately, alienation of the population the soldiers are trying to protect.

Fry the Brain is both a history lesson and a glimpse into the future. The book demonstrates that urban guerrilla sniping is a dramatic departure from the traditional concepts of sniping. West makes a solid case that formal training and a precision rifle are not prerequisites for effective sniping and that given the right conditions, some innovative thinking and knowledge of unconventional methods of sniping, a self-taught sniper can prove to be just as effective as a formally trained one.

A very good read

This book is the first of its type that I have read which didnt seem to be regurgitating an army field manual. There is quite a lot of good information here regarding tactics used by both snipers and counter-snipers and pros and cons of both. I found the analysis of the JFK assassination to be particularly interesting as well as the chapter on the DC snipers. I would definitely recommend it to law enforcement and anyone else interested in the subject.

The Case of Nancy Drew: An Adult Reader's Thoughts on BUNGALOW MYSTERY

Originally written by Mildred Wirt Benson from outlines by Edward Stratemeyer, the Nancy Drew series was first published in 1930s. THE BUNGALOW MYSTERY was the third book in the series, and it and those that followed presented its heroine as a rich, headstrong, and distinctly reckless teenager who sometimes carried a pistol and who wasn't above breaking the law when it suited her purposes.

As the series progressed and other writers began to generate Nancy Drew novels, the character changed and Nancy was "toned down;" instead of flatly rich, she became reasonably affluent; recklessness was replaced by commonsense caution; and while she might be willing to bend the law a bit she would never knowingly break it. In the 1950s and 1960s the earlier novels were re-written to reflect this change in character.

THE BUNGALOW MYSTERY opens with Nancy and friend Helen aboard a small boat--which begins to sink in a sudden storm. Helen is hurt, and although Nancy is a strong swimmer they are soon in danger of their lives. Fortunately, they are rescued by Laura, a recently orphaned teenager who is in the area to meet her new guardians. Nancy soon becomes suspicious of Laura's guardians and determines to investigate the matter; at the same time her father, attorney Carson Drew, is investigating the theift of bonds from a local bank. As is the way of Nancy Drew stories, these two plots soon link, and Nancy finds herself facing a ruthless gang of kidnappers and con artists.

The book is very much of its era: you will not find any cell phones, computers, or similar modern gadgets between its covers. Nancy herself is the "perfect good girl" according to the standards of the day: she tends toward skirts and jackets, wears gloves for social occasion, and is never too busy to whip up a quick luncheon (chicken salad always seems to be a favorite) for family or friends. And she is always prepared, even to the extent of having an overnight bag in the trunk of her car complete with two changes of clothing and a swim suit, just in case!

The Nancy Drew books are not great literature by any stretch of the imagination--they are too distinctly formula for that--but they are competently written, literate, and never talk down to their target audience. They are also good "comfort reading" for grown-ups who recall their childhood reading fondly.

Quite Enjoyable

I read quite a few of the Nancy Drew Mysteries as a child. I have retained only five of those books in my personal library, so I recently decided to start collecting them again and, of course, to re-read them. My mom gave me three this Christmas, one of which was the facsimile edition of the Bungalow Mystery from Applewood Books. This book is somewhat longer than the more common Grosset & Dunlap editions (the yellow hardcover books). Having read reviews on the facsimile editions, I was expecting something quite different than what I was used to. Upon reading the book, I did not find it (the story) to be very much different from the modernized editions. The illustrations, however, are very different and better. The quality of the book is much better, as well. Of the two editions, I would recommend the facsimile over the re-edited versions.

Second Best

This was the 2nd best book in the series, only to its predecessor, The Hidden Staircase. The book kicks into action around page 70 and is non-stop suspense from there on. Its actually one of the few books that has a good mystery in the story and the cliff hangers at the end of each chapter are well thought out. In my opinion most of the Nancy Drew books were awful. The set is over rated. Of the original 56 books, about 25 of them are good. Half the set. This ranks in at #2 with me.

Another good addition to the series. There's a lot to like about Career of Evil but, unfortunately, a few major shortcomings. Without spoiling anything, this time out our hero is trying to nab a serial killer with a taste for dismemberment. It might be one of three suspects Strike has a history with, or perhaps another unknown killer. The plot has been detailed by others at length, so I'll just offer some thoughts about the pluses and minuses:

The Good:
- Robin, one of the most interesting and likable characters JKR has ever created, co-stars in the novel and her identity is superbly defined
- Strike's backstory is addressed in more detail, and it's very compelling
- The settings are vividly depicted, with excellent descriptions of sites all over seedy and posh London and Northern England
- Heavy topics like rape, child abuse, and mental illness are thoughtfully considered and woven into the narrative without being overly preachy
- The relationship between Robin and Strike continues to develop in a complex, unpredictable way
- The dialog is consistently excellent and realistic
- Much less emphasis on Strike's disability, which plagued the last novel
- The reveal, unlike the first two novels, is not an endless explanatory monologue -- it's thankfully short and sweet
**These positives far outweigh the following negatives, definitely making Career of Evil a worthwhile read. Nevertheless...

The Bad:
- Many of the characters are one-dimensional. While Strike and Robin are increasingly depicted as complicated, multifaceted protagonists, most others are portrayed without any significant depth. The bad guys are REALLY bad; the victims are hopelessly innocent, others just occupy space. Some, like Matthew and Whittaker, are cartoonishly described and Detective Carver is, to put it bluntly, Vernon Dursely
- Someone needs to pluck up the courage and let the author know she needs an editor. The book is downright plodding at times.
- The basic premise of the plot is forced and improbable (BIID? Really?)
- Each chapter leads with lyrics from a Blue Oyster Cult song. These lines figure into the story (sort of), but this silly gimmick gets old fast
- The violence (and there is quite a lot) is gratuitously over the top, as if JKR is determined to identify herself as an adult writer
- The comic element featured in the first two novels is largely absent in the third

The Ugly:
- The book features intermittent passages shown from the killer's perspective which are eye-rollingly bad. I hate to say that but it's true. Think of every serial killer you've ever seen in a movie or read about in a book, and that's the stereotype you get -- right down to the killer's referring to a woman as "It" a la Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. These sections are so subpar, so cliched, and so unimaginative that it's hard to believe that JKR wrote them. I suppose they are included to give the narrative an additional angle but, rather than compliment the story's trajectory, they dumb it down.

Despite its drawbacks, Career of Evil is a very good read. Slow at times, but enjoyable. As said above, the positives outweigh the negatives. In particular, the maturing of Robin's and Strike's characters is a leap forward. I wouldn't be surprised if this book is regarded as the most popular one in the series so far, although the hyper-violent yet cliched serial killer may be off-putting to some.

A good story with a bad ending that leaves the reader ...

A good story with a bad ending that leaves the reader hanging and yearning for further development. I was reminded of certain TV series (Netflix), (Showtime), etc. where nothing is resolved at the end of the season because the series is going on for another season. Such a realization prevents my future interest in the Cameron Strike series, as it has now become predictable. Had Robin and Strike acted on the enhanced aspects of their relationship, had the development of Robin's character not ended with a thump when, unbenounced to Robin, Matthew blocks Strikes calls from Robin's phone while she is in the ladies' room, phone left behind; and Robin is never to know what was said on Strike's phone messages erased by Mathew. In fact it was so infuriating that such a strong character as Robin could end up being literally "duped," that rather than being goaded on to read further books, I was too disgusted by this conclusion to retain an interest in subject matters that will never be resolved. Almost as distressing was Strike's final actions as detective, solving this case in such a ridiculous, unprofessional manner, a scenario requiring more explanation and less guesswork. A far cry from Lulu Landrey; bad handling of an ending to a long story by a writer I would expect more from. I found the book suspenseful, it held my interest, but I was critical of the endless narrative of certain character and geographical descriptions. Realizing that certain issues will be addressed but not resolved in the next book has turned me off; I would read a sequel only if I had nothing else to read. Dangling a reader on a string can stimulate interest but in my case it worked in reverse.

An overall disappointing story.

Mr Galbraith's third book appears deadline-pressured. The plot has some good parts in the way it tries to focus on some of the more evil crimes committed in the society, but otherwise the story is generally weak. There is nothing so smart or exciting in the mystery solving as to make it necessary for Ms Rowling to write.

Separately, Cormoran-Robin's do-they-really-love-each-ther-or-not drags so much that one simply loses interest while the author exhibits his (?) own bind on which way to swing for the future of the series. If he makes them partners, he might not be able to use them as crime-solving partners without throwing in domestic issues. Yet, the good author does not want to disappoint the readers. This time around, the Hermione-Harry travesty is just too cumbersome for most to bother beyond a point. Cormoran Strike is no Ted Mosby (How I Met Your Mother) to keep the audience waiting for so long on his Robin.

The most disappointing aspect of the book is the actual suspense and resolution - just too straightforward and without a material twist for a book of the kind. There was no thrilling action sequence which is par for the Galbraith books but not the lack of a tale twist.
