The 2nd Peanuts Book Ever!
By W. Langan
I don't know where or how you're going to get the 1st Peanuts book, but if you do, please let me know! Anyways, this book is the early years of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Schroeder, Patti (no not Peppermint Patty who would come into the picture years later), Voilet, and Shermy. Also, Linus is introduced here as a baby. The characters look a little different than what you're used to since many of these cartoons originally date from 1952 and 1953. Lucy is kind of cute with her big eyes (no Psychiatric Help booth yet) and Snoopy was still a little puppy (he hadn't yet climbed to the top of his doghouse but he knew how to drive Charlie Brown and Schroeder nuts!). Anyways, a must for your collection if you can get your hands on it!

I loved peanuts as a child
By elizabeth nolan
I was a huge peanuts fan as a kid. And I had a lot of the books. Eventually, I got out of the phase, but when the movie was released, I found myself going back in. I loved peanuts as a child, and it is still my favorite. I love the old school peanuts, when snoopy was a cute little pup and patty, violet, shermy were bigger characters. I love when the series started and the kids were really little. Lucy was there, but she wasn't as in your face as she is today. Schroder and Linus were babies, and things were a lot different. I think the earliest peanuts strips were the best, and this book is a great representation of those strips. There are some really funny stories here...like about bare soup and dolly abuse. If you're a peanuts fan, or hoping to get your kid into the series, the first three books in the reprinted series are the best!

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up–This reproduction of a classic goes back to the heyday of comics, and it's full of complex characters, plot twists, and classic storytelling. While this comic never obtained the status of some of the publisher's series like Batman, it is no doubt excellent in every way and will keep the interest of any comic-book readers who give it a try. Typical of DC comics, the illustrations are dark and full of energy, perfectly complementing the text. Its only real drawback is that the art looks dated, which will turn off some readers who want a fresher look.–Scott La Counte, Anaheim Public Library, CA

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Balk at acquiring DC's $50-per-tome series reprinting all of The Spirit because, well, you've just never read the strip? Then this paperback showcasing the strip's essence in 22 vintage stories is your book. The earliest 2, "The Origin of the Spirit" (1940) and "Silk Satin" (1941), respectively introducing the hero and a recurring character, aren't as visually adventurous as Eisner's work after his World War II hiatus from The Spirit. Still, they already demonstrate two of Eisner's strengths in the skewed perspective and the bold, anti-naturalistic color juxtapositions of virtually every panel. In the 20 postwar stories, playing with perspective is subordinated to point of view, and expressionistic lighting justifies the clashing hues. If the changes dissipate the low-rent-cubist elan of the early stories, Eisner compensates with special effects--panels in monochrome and dichrome, special styles of panel framing, visually bracketing one stream of action within another, photo backdrops--and seldom uses any one device throughout the story. Not as easy to see but no less virtuosic than the artwork is The Spirit's complex tone as a piece of pop art that indulges and satirizes the improbabilities of crime comics but doesn't countenance any carping about the heroic and social virtues its protagonist exemplifies. Maybe you do need that big, pricey series. Ray Olson

About the Author
Will Eisner is one of the most important creators to have worked in the comics medium. Not only did he innovate the entire newspaper strip format with The Spirit, but in A Contract With God, a book-length comic detailing life in a Jewish tenement, he is also credited with publishing the first "graphic novel" (indeed, Eisner himself coined the term). Brilliantly creative until his death in 2005, Eisner's shadow still looms large over the modern comics industry, and may it ever remain so!

Love Will Eisner, Love the Spirit, but.....
By DocSavage
I enjoyed this book collection of some of the best Spirit strips...except for....somebody had taken scissors and cut panels out in various places. I know I bought this used in "good" shape and the clipped panels didn't take much away from the story but dang! Why did somebody ruin a great book.

You can see the skill level in drawing and inking develop through the years plus the influence of "political correctness" as the Spirit's sidekick early on was a very stylized "StepandFetchet" with giant red lips and pretty horrible English. Later issues the sidekick is white and buck toothed....and still obnoxious. The character names remind me of Al Capp's variety used in the "Lil' Abner" strips....Sand Sarief for example.

If you enjoy comics, graphic novels (ala Frank Miller, Robert Kirkman) then check out the "daddy" of them all..the Spirit.

great selection
By holly moors
The Spirit is a classic in American comics. The series are being republished in very expensive volumes, but these are only for fans. This is a great one for starters - a good pick of the best Spiritstories. Only one minor minus here - the stories are printed on cheap paper. Hmm. Still a great collection for anyone who's unknown to the spirit.

By Daniel Taylor
The only reason I'm holding one star back is because I'm old. The art in these stories is so nuanced and rich that it should have been presented larger than standard comic book size. But that's the only bone I have to pick with this volume. Younger readers who don't have to squint to read this will be well rewarded.

And with a price like this, there's really no excuse not to treat yourself.

Will Eisner may not have invented the comic book, but he was one of the people who made them good. His talent and influence helped transform the medium from kids' throwaway entertainment to literature. "The Spirit" is Eisner at the height of his powers, and this collection is the best of the best. The phrase "no collection should be without it" has become watered-down through overuse, but in this case it is no less than the truth. If you're at all interested in comic books, this is where you start.

Benjamin Graham, Building a Profession: The Early Writings of the Father of Security Analysis, by Jason Zweig

Learn and profit from the early writings of a financial genius

Benjamin Graham is widely known as the father of Value Investing, and mentor to Warren Buffett. But Graham made another critically important contribution by advocating that securities analysts should meet minimum requirements of knowledge, and be held to high standards of ethical conduct—in short, that the profession should be treated as seriously as other fields of study, like accounting, medicine or law.

Benjamin Graham and the Birth of the Professional Financial Analyst showcases Graham’s important contribution to remaking investment analysis as a profession. This fascinating collection spanning 30 years offers us valuable perspectives on investing and financial markets—many as vital in the present day as they were in Graham’s own tumultuous mid-twentieth century—and reveals the evolution of Graham’s passionate belief in the creation of a financial profession and a science of financial analysis.

An Undiscovered Gem.
By AdamSmythe
This book has been in print for about two months, and so far there are no Amazon reviews. It's not exactly a best seller, but for those with an interest in securities analysis, perhaps you should read on. I'll briefly cover the organization of this book and then state why I think it's an important read.

First, the book is divided into four parts, each with an introduction written by Jason Zweig and Rodney Sullivan. Included in each of the first three parts are a half-dozen essays, on average, that were written by Benjamin Graham from the 1930s to the early 1960s. These essays and some later speeches are the heart of the book, which is why Zweig and Sullivan are editors, not authors. (Indeed, over 80% of the words in the book were written by Graham.) The good majority of Graham's essays appeared as articles in The Analysts Journal. The fourth part of the book begins with another introduction by the two editors, followed by a series of speeches or interviews given by Graham. The general theme of the articles and speeches is Graham's observations and arguments for the establishment of a profession of securities analysis. The need for professional standards may seem obvious today, but it was a somewhat heretical idea 70 years ago.

Okay, so why might you want to buy this book? If you are like me, you'll likely read anything written by Graham that you can get your hands on. Though he wrote decades ago, the clarity and to-this-day timeliness of his writings are amazing. If you didn't know when these articles were written, in many cases you might have guessed they were written within the last 10 years. Further, although the main theme of this book is the establishment of a securities analysis profession, there is a lot of very pertinent and useful investment analysis in Graham's writings. For example, one of my favorite articles, "The New Speculation in Common Stocks," was written in 1958 and remains as clear, powerful and pertinent today as back then.

In sum, Benjamin Graham famously wrote about undiscovered investment gems. For many of those interested in securities analysis, this is one of them.

Investing in its infancy
By Don
I picked up a copy of Benjamin Graham, Building a Profession: The Early Writings of the Father of Security Analysis. I like to read these books about historical finance because everyone has forgotten about what investing was like in olden times. To remember what has just happened requires a constant struggle!

When Graham started in 1914, investors often had to go to the library of the NYSE to view annual reports. There was much less information, and what was available was harder to obtain. Of course, now the situation has inverted, and it is easier and cheaper to invest from somewhere else. Basing your investment operation in Manhattan is obsolete.

Investors were also much more skeptical of stocks: "[T]he determiners of price change were thought to be an entirely different set of factors - all of them very human," a concept which validates Prechter's theory of the market. In 1924, when Common Stocks as Long Term Investments was written, the title was intended to be provocative, as "no respectable person believed that stocks should be regarded as investments at all." Or, as we say on Credit Bubble Stocks, "stocks are for selling, bonds are for buying."

The most interesting takeaway was the extremely low valuations that prevailed during Graham's early years. There is an amazing story of IBM stock in 1916 (then known as CTR, Computer-Tabulating-Recording Co). At that time, the stock had a 7% dividend yield, traded at a third of book value, and less than ten times earnings! And people still said it was overpriced and they wouldn't "touch it with a ten-foot pole"!

Valuations were spectacularly low in 1932 at the stock market bottom. Graham studied 600 industrial companies listed on the NYSE and found that 200 were selling for less than their net quick assets. As he put it, businesses had come to be valued "on an entirely different basis from that applied to private enterprise." But, "if the commitment would be attractive as an ordinary business venture, it should be even more attractive as part of a publicly held enterprise, with the added advantage of... ready marketability."

Corporate governance is the same sad story it has always been; the intractable agency problem in human affairs. It is telling that by the end of his career, Graham basically gave up on it.

First, Do Not Lose (Harm) - As In The Hippocratic Oath
By James East
To abstain from doing harm, or more colloquial as in - `First, do not harm' which is believed to have been written by the famous Greek physician Hippocrates is the basis of Benjamin Graham's writings and teachings in his theme of `margin of safety'. In connection with the release of the sixth edition to Security Analysis, which I would comment is very good, this companion reader of that release is a collection of shorter writings by Graham. The compilation covers the time frame of '32-'77.

In the book you will be introduced to some items that main street is not that aware of in that Graham was not strictly a cigar-butt or a net-net investor only. One learns that his investment style was more nuanced than simply a statistically cheap asset, as he was not shy about arbitrage or good quality growth stocks. From `Toward a Science of Security Analysis', - "A case can be made for putting all your growth eggs in the one best or a relatively few best baskets."

However, one will no less get a heavy dose of the first do no harm aspect of investing. To stress this point with more gravitas, Warren Buffett loves quoting the following rules on investing which is "Rule #1: Don't Lose Money, and Rule #2: Don't Forget Rule #1". So, if wisdom comes either from Hippocrates of Kos, or by Warren Buffett of Omaha, this book will reinforce that the precondition for sustaining a high compound rate of growth is dictated by avoiding serious loss.

A Must for fans of snake jewelry
By Amazon Customer
This is a great book for fans of snake jewelry. The book is not large (which is the only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5) but, it makes up for that with images of obscure pieces of jewelry from many different periods. A great addition to jewelry libraries and especially to those who are fascinated with snake designs over the centuries.

Beautiful book
By Magdalena
As a fan of snake-themed jewellery, I love this book. It spans the centuries going from Roman through to contemporary, with the Art Nouveau section being particularly nice as you would expect.

Good Thinking: Seven Powerful Ideas That Influence the Way We Think, by Denise D. Cummins

After reading this book, you will be wiser in two ways: You will know how the best and brightest thinkers judge the ways we decide, argue, solve problems, and tell right from wrong. But you will also understand why, when we don't meet these standards, it is not always a bad thing. The answers are rooted in the way the human brain has been wired to make us kinder and more generous than economists think we ought to be, but more resistant to change and persuasion than scientists and scholars think is good for us.

Review
Cambridge University Press Staff Pics: Top 5 Recommended Reading and Gifts, Dec, 2012.

"an entertaining and accessible review of the classical theories of reasoning and decision making." -- Dr. Mike Oaksford, University of London

"...considers both the strengths and weaknesses of our mental machinery" Daniel L. Schacter, Professor of Psychology, Harvard

"InGood Thinking, psychologist and philosopher Denise Cummins reveals how economists, philosophers and other experts have helped to define what makes a decision rational or a judgment moral. She lays out the seven basic tenets that guide our critical thinking and explores tactics to correct faulty logic."--Victoria Stern, Mind Books Roundup,Scientific American, Nov, 2012

"By serendipity, I came acrossGood Thinking, and I am glad I did. I thought I had a fairly decent reading knowledge of Behavioral Economics, and I had not come across a number of ideas in this book. I have found Cummins' observations very useful additions on my work on financial decision-making under uncertainty. -- Charles Faulkner, featured inThe New Market Wizards,The Intuitive Trader, and others as well as the author of several programs on metaphoric change.

"...a witty and articulate overview of critical aspects of human thought processes...The astute examples anchor the topics squarely in readers' everyday experience." --Dr. Richard Gerrig, Professor of Psychology and Psycholinguistics, SUNY at Stonybrook

"Good Thinking will take you on a quick and engaging tour of the landscape of human thinking, surveying the phenomena that psychologists and philosophers have found there."
Keith Holyoak, Distinguished Professor of Psychology, University of California, Los Angeles

"... the book illuminates the strengths and the pitfalls of the ways people think; readers may be surprised at human cognitive fallibility ... offers a compelling discussion of the current work in cognitive neuroscience that reveals the neural complexities of thought process ... readers who choose to look at this interesting book will be making a good decision ... Recommended ..."
B. C. Beins, Choice

"...Good Thinking is cleverly written and well pitched to a college- or university-level audience of undergraduates who would benefit from an excellent survey of concepts and theories that are not likely to be seen elsewhere in a single collection, and it represents some of the more powerful ideas that our intellectual culture considers as the basis for rationality. Virtually every idea in Good Thinking can be gotten elsewhere either in its original form or as part of extended volumes on a specific topic, but having them tied together in a single book written by a single hand gives more life and cohesiveness to the ensemble than might otherwise be the case ... a pleasant way to stimulate the appetite for more ... For some time to come, Good Thinking will be a relevant and useful resource for educators as well as those who seek to reflect on our Western thought traditions and their origins."
Dr Donald MacGregor, Senior Research Scientist, Decision Science Research Institute, Eugene, Oregon

"Denise Dellarosa Cummins - philosopher and psychologist - explores the way experts across various fields argue and deal with very challenging issues that directly impact our lives ... A very interesting book for philosophical practitioners, mainly due to the author's interdisciplinary approach and ability to summarize relevant outputs from both human and neurosciences."
Fernando Salvetti, Philosophical Practice: Journal of the APPA

From the Author
Good Thinking: Seven Questions for Denise Cummins
From This Side of the Pond
By CambridgeBlog ⋅ May 7, 2012

Why did you decide to write Good Thinking?

Over the course of my teaching career, I became aware of something rather alarming: Science majors know all about hypothesis-testing, philosophy majors know all about argumentation, and business students know about economic theories. But they know very little about research in disciplines outside of their majors. And then these bright and well-educated people are asked to evaluate proposed economic, legal, or medical policies, and sometimes even to vote on them. How are they to do that when there are holes in their knowledge bases where crucial pieces of information should be?

You're a professor of psychology, but in this book you explore decision-making in many different fields: economics, philosophy, science, etc. How did you go about discovering more about their methods?

Most people equate psychology with psychotherapy. In my first book, The Other Side of Psychology, I introduced audiences to the science of psychology: psychologists who study how we perceive, learn, think, and decide. Experimental psychologists conduct scientific investigations into these questions, and we are well-trained in scientific methodology. Daniel Kahneman is an experimental psychologist who won the Nobel Prize in Economics for his research and theorizing on decision-making. My own training has included cognitive science, philosophy, computer science, and business.

Was there anything that surprised you while you were researching and writing the book? Is there something you learned from it that you've incorporated into your own thinking?

The controversy over mammogram screening surprised me-that women were paying no attention to the science underlying the recommendations and were instead outraged over what they saw as a corner-cutting decision at the expense of their health. I incorporated that controversy into the book so that patients would better understand evidence-based medicine, how it is done, and what it means for their own lives and thinking about health.

When have you used some of these seven decision-making tools?

I use hypothesis-testing in my research on human reasoning and decision-making. I keep Bayes firmly in mind when evaluating medical screening recommendations or investment choices. And I seek Nash equilibrium when choosing weekend activities with my husband-that is, I rather do something together that is not my top choice rather than do my top choice by myself.

Some of these seven ideas have become hot topics in the last decade, like rational choice or game theory. But you also devote attention to the power of analogy, calling it "the core of cognition." Why does it have so much power?

The simple answer is that our minds seem to be wired that way. We tend to notice similarities among people and events, and then assume that what is true of one is true of everything that looks or seems the same. This is a very powerful strategy, but can lead to disastrous consequences (as in stereotyping). The upside is that analogy is a powerful means of making people understand things, because it helps them to see something unfamiliar in familiar terms. For example, when Ben Bernanke persuaded us to approve the bailout of the financial industry, he did so by telling us the banking industry was like an irresponsible neighbor who smoked in bed and set fire to his house in your neighborhood of houses made of wood. This was a very powerful and very persuasive analogy. And only time will tell whether it was the right analogy to draw.

You illustrate many times when our brains lead us to different conclusions than experts do. Why are we so prone to error?

One of the messages of the book is that when we reach a different conclusion than experts, we have not necessarily made an error. The market now is awash in books bemoaning human irrationality and stupidity. But I think that vastly undersells human intelligence.

You can see this in the idea of rational choice. Most people don't appreciate that the core of economic theory is the concept of a rational agent where "rational" means "self-interested." When people "make mistakes" in economic game-based research, their "mistakes" don't focus solely on how they will benefit from a course of action but how it will affect others as well. This is considered "error" according to standard treatments of rational choice. Experimental economists have had to introduce the notions of fairness and inequity-aversion into economic theory in order to predict and explain how people behave. I don't think these concepts are evidence of "faulty" thinking, and I am not alone in that.

Are there ways that we can use our "faulty" reasoning for the better?

The best way to improve decision-making is to be aware of built-in biases that can be disastrous if exploited by others. Politicians often use analogy to persuade us to support their plans because analogy is a very powerful means of making people think about something new in terms of something they already understand. So we can be lured into believing something is simpler than it really is. Be suspicious of simplistic analogies. Because we tend to accept conclusions that jibe with our beliefs, we tend to ignore the quality of the argument leading up to them. This is called belief bias, and we can arm ourselves against it by evaluating the argument, not just its conclusion. We avoid risk when there is a chance to gain money, but we become risky when there is a chance that we will lose money. If you know that, then you are less likely to (for example) hold on to a bad investment hoping it will gain value again (risky choice) rather than cutting your losses short (safer choice). --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

A fascinating overview of the thinking process
By John Gibbs
Most people have a limited understanding of the ideas that shape the way we think, according to Denise Cummins in this book. Lawyers understand argumentation, stockbrokers understand decision theories that drive equity markets, psychologists understand how the brain is wired, and scientists understand scientific investigation, but very few people have an understanding of all of these fields.

The seven ideas which the book discusses are:

* Rational choice, which means making decisions aimed at producing the most desired outcome.
* Game theory, which involves making decisions which are affected by the simultaneous decisions of other people.
* Moral judgment, which includes identifying what is right and what is wrong.
* Scientific reasoning, which includes the use of reason to determine causality, and also the construction and testing of hypotheses.
* Logic, which involves discerning truth from a series of propositions.
* Problem solving, which means searching for solutions which produce a desired result.
* Analogical reasoning, which is about using one situation to help explain another.

In pursuing these different aspects of thinking, the author takes the reader on a journey through an extraordinary range of disciplines including economics, cognitive science, philosophy, morality, mathematics, experimental science, theoretical science, law and business management. We get to see how easily and frequently people are misled into making poor decisions, different ways in which people distinguish right from wrong, the most effective ways of testing hypotheses, and how insights really happen.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, which I found to be as entertaining as it is informative. Most readers will benefit by having their understanding of what is meant by "thinking" considerably broadened by the book's cross-disciplinary approach.

A Gem of a Book on Reasoning
By Book Fanatic
This is not really a practical book although the reader can certainly glean some tips on how to improve their thinking by reading it. It is more an examination of the ways in which we think and what is right and wrong with them. The author in the introduction says:

"After reading this book, readers should be empowered to decide for themselves whether human reasoning is as frail or as strong, as dangerous or as benign, or as superfluous or as crucial as it has been made out to be."

The book is relatively short (about 180 pages of text) and thus is a fairly easy read. One certainly does not have to slog through it. It is written in a friendly style and only occasionally gets technical. The author does not go deep into any one type of reasoning but presents seven different modes of thinking (thus the subtitle of the book) on a broader scale. However, despite that one comes away from the book with a decent understanding of each. The seven modes are Rational Choice, Game Theory, Moral Judgement, Scientific Reasoning, Logic, Problem Solving, and Analogical Reasoning.

I really liked this book and can easily recommend it. If you interested in the human mind I think you will like it.

Good thinking, bad writing
By CollectedReader
The topic of the book really interested me, as I've read many texts on this and related subjects. But by page 6, I was already getting skeptical of the relevance of this book. Why? because on page six the author mentions "..when we've learned about Bayesian decision making..". Um, we didn't (in the book anyway). Then the author goes on with a rash of definitions with no depth or explanations by the Game Theory section, chapter 2. The next chapter doesn't get any better.
So now I question if the other reviewers read the book at all. Am I the only one? I'm not saying that the book isn't useful. If you are looking for a brief description of various topics on this subject area then this book will be for you. Though I'm not sure how useful that is.
What I expected was a better explanation with proper examples than a myriad of definitions. This is not helpful for the lay person that the book is intended for.
I'd give it about 2.5 stars rather than three. I was tempted to give 2 stars but I didn't complete reading the book so I'm giving some benefit of the doubt.
