About the Author

Phil Hughes MBE is a well-known UK safety professional with over 40 years worldwide experience as Head of Environment, Health and Safety at two large multinationals: Courtaulds and Fisons. Phil started work in health and safety in the Factory Inspectorate at the Derby District UK in 1969 and moved to Courtaulds in 1974. He joined IOSH in that year and became Chairman of the Midland Branch, then National Treasurer and was President in 1990–1991.

Phil has been very active in the NEBOSH Board for over 10 years and served as Chairman from 1995 to 2001. He was also a Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers for many years and has lectured widely throughout the world. Phil received the RoSPA Distinguished Service Award in May 2001 and was a Director and Trustee of RoSPA from 2003–2010. He received an MBE in the New Year Honours List 2005 for services to Health and Safety. Phil is a Chartered Fellow of IOSH.

Ed Ferrett is an experienced health and safety consultant who has practised for over 25 years. With a PhD and an Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham University, Ed spent 30 years in Higher and Further education, retiring as the Head of the Faculty of Technology of Cornwall College in 1993. Since then he has been an independent consultant to several public and private sector organisations including construction businesses, the Regional Health and Safety Adviser for the Government Office (West Midlands), and was Chair of West of Cornwall Primary Care NHS Trust for 6 years until 2006.

Ed was a member of the NEBOSH Board from 1995 until 2010 and Vice Chair from 1999 to 2008. He has delivered many health and safety courses and has been a lecturer in NEBOSH courses for various course providers. He has been an External Examiner for an MSc course and BSc course in Health and Safety at two UK Universities, a Reporting Inspector for Independent Further and Higher Education with the British Accreditation Council and a NEBOSH Ambassador. Ed is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Member of IOSH.

He almost died four times on his young journey, but God’s grace covered him. After getting another chance to play college football, Prim decided to play with a chip on his shoulder. But the season didn’t go the way he expected. At the NFL pro day he didn’t do too well and never received any calls back from any scouts. After that, Edric no longer had the same desire to compete .There was something missing in his soul. He decided to start living for God. He enrolled in Bible College, hungry to learn more about God. Prim show’s how our lives are either a warning or an example to the world. The byproduct of him falling on his face from destructive choices turned out to be the very thing that he used to relate to people who have similar struggles: the struggle to overcome. The book shows Edric’s scars, but he also shares the wisdom he learned throughout his growing process. Your life has meaning, no matter where you’re from. If you manage to get through it without it destroying your testimony, then your life ultimately has substance. You are not too far out gone, your life can change for the better, and you owe it to yourself to attach the right attitude onto those negative mood killers that comes out your way.

I must say, it's been hard for me to turn away from reading it. I'm very impressed. It's very inspiring and humbling. The best thing about it is a lot of people will be able to relate to it. You're the light that came from Loxley. It's good to see where you've come from to where you're at now God is good and he has blessed you with great talent! Great job my friend!!

There are some devastating reveals throughout which keeps the story compelling without feeling overdone. Know what you're getting into!

A lot of the negative reviews on this product are about the language, gloom, and unlikeable characters.
I don't really have a problem with any of those.

1. Language - yes there is quite a bit of cussing in the book but I did not find it overly excessive in any way. I don't shy away from curse words and when I was a teenager I'm pretty sure they were 80% of my vocabulary. Honestly, compared to how I used to talk the cursing in this book was mild. I didn't even notice it most the time because it just seemed to me, the way teenagers would be talking.

2. "Gloom" - There are a lot of negative situations in the book. I'm not sure what people expected when buying a book about a group of friends trying to deal with suicide. Skipping school, underage drinking, risky behavior, running away, smoking, issues with your family. Yeah, that just about sums up high school for me. I guess for people that had a good go of it in high school, this may seem disturbing. Personally I found it deliciously manic at times. While the repetition of words can get annoying I chose to look at it as another sign of Ella's mental decline. Her thoughts are often veering all over the place, impulsive, melodramatic, etc. Again - accurate to my experience of being a teenage girl.

3. Unlikeable characters - So Ella and her friends are 'mean girls.' Okay, no one likes a bully, I get it. But through her internal monologue you see that she doesn't always like herself for what she is doing, and that she puts up this shell to keep herself from getting hurt. While I'm sure they wouldn't make super fun friends to have in the context of the book, from Ella's mind, they're very human and understandable characters. So they don't always take the high road or make the best choices. That is what makes them real, they are flawed, as we all are.

I gave 4 stars because I did at times get annoying with the writing style, mostly the repeating words. Also while it was an enjoyable read, a good story about growing up and the wrong way to deal with issues (lol) I can't say it really made me THINK or gave me any startling revelations about the world or myself...which IMO is what the best of books do.

Wow, this book has a lot of negative reviews, and I'm not sure why. I actually liked this book. It took a while to get into, but was worth it for me. The top complaint seems to be the abundance of profanity, to which I say, have you ever been around teenagers? It's accurate. The other complaint I see is that it's 'melodramatic', which is just an insult to anyone who has lost a loved one. Melodramatic? Everyone deals with their grief in different ways, and the main character had just lost their best friend, to suicide, no less. She and her friends do and say things that are harmful to both themselves and others, but they are in severe pain, and by the end of the book, they learn to resolve their problems and face their grief in a much healthier way. For that development, I think this is a fantastic read and guide to managing unhealthy emotions in a turbulent time. My only complaint would probably be the fact that therapy was brushed off so quickly and so often as an option. Her best friend just died. Of course she should be in therapy. I'm always annoyed to see the already overwhelming stigma of mental health furthered in media, particularly a book addressing teen suicide. You know that many of the readers of such a book will be individuals who identify with the subject, and therapy can be extremely helpful and even lifesaving when a good therapist is found. Beyond that, the writing's not perfect, but the important ideas of pain and the freeing power of forgiveness are delivered wonderfully, and for that, I appreciate this book.

Solid, Albeit Sad, Story

There's nothing I hated about Fall to Pieces. It's a good read, quite sad, but nothing more, nothing less than that. I think that's my biggest problem. Usually, I'm compelled to start and finish a great read in one sitting, and this one had me willing to put it down and return to it later, so I can't say it was a gripping read.

Ella, Mark, and Petal are desperately missing their friend, Amy. Amy jumped off a roof to her death, and the three are struggling with grief. Worse, Ella's blacked out and can't remember the details involving her best friend's suicide, and that bothers her even more. She's desperately trying to remember what led her friend to commit suicide and if they could have stopped her.

Since that tragic night, the trio have been playing a game called Pick Me Ups. This game involves jumping from high points, barn lofts, bridges, etc. and every time they play, Ella remembers a little more about the night. When she meets a new boy at school and involves him in their game, Ella realizes there's more to this mysterious "E," than any of them knew.

I'd heard a lot of people complaining about the language in this book. I, for one, didn't find it excessive, I found it pretty honest. I've been around enough teens running car pools, etc. to know that the ones who have emotional issues or problems at home usually do tend to mask some of their pain with language. Had the teens in this book not thrown out F-bombs from time to time, I would have found it a little less realistic. The language choices fit well with the characters.

The story is dark and pretty gloomy, but then teen angst, especially after a suicide, isn't filled with sunshine and rainbows. I remember when one of my brother's friends/classmates put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger. It shocked a town and left so many grieving teens not sure what they could have done to stop him. The author does a great job capturing that emotion too.

The author was a teen when she wrote it. She captures their mood, uncertainty, and angst well. It's not a happy story, the material dictates that it simply could never be upbeat, but it does capture grief in its stages and creates a very realistic portrait of the teens left behind to handle very difficult events.

About the Author

Kwame Kwei-Armah won the Peggy Ramsay award for his first play, Bitter Herb (1998), and has since had three plays commissioned and produced by the National Theatre, with the first, Elmina's Kitchen, winning him the 2004 Evening Standard and Charles Wintor Awards for Most Promising Playwright, and being nominated for a Laurence Olivier award for Best New Play 2003. Eugen Fink (1905–1975) was a student and colleague of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. Spiel als Weltsymbol was published in 1960. This is the first English translation.

Very insightful read - up close and personal

This is one of the best books I've read about what makes a successful entrepreneur. It reads very easily and is packed with information that is easy to understand - even to someone who is not an entrepreneur like myself. Each chapter in the book is about a different entrepreneur and covers companies like Aveda, Best Buy, Great Clips, Medtronic, among several others. In the introduction the author mentions that the book is a result of interviews with each of the entrepreneurs - which is probably why each chapter reads like a story in itself. Each chapter has details starting from the the childhood experiences of the entrepreneur, to the successes and lessons learned on their journey to success - and includes circumstances and considerations that resulted in decisions made by them. I liked how the author highlights "lessons learned" after each section. I also liked that I got a good insight into not just the financial and environmental circumstances and decisions that led to their successes, but that I also got a good sense of the personalities of the entrepreneurs interviewed. Besides the insight into entrepreneur's personal considerations, I also found the details on how they handled funding and cash flow related situations very insightful. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who either wants to become an entrepreneur, or is an entrepreneur and would like to gain insight into how to deal with some complex situations, or is just plain curious about what makes these billionaires tick.

This is a one of those "you gotta read it" books

I am an entrepreneur and have my MBA from The Wharton School. What I learned from Dr. Rao and his book was like receiving a mini-MBA in how to launch and grow a business.

First, I heard Dr. Rao make a speech presenting many insights he found in his adventure of interviewing this group of successful entrepreneurs. Dr. Rao's presentation used humor and his perspective from his own successful career to demonstrate how entrepreneurs often start down a chosen path but have life and competitors steer them in other directions which leads to the entrepreneur's success and wealth. I took notes furiously during the presentation, barely able to keep up with the ideas that come flying at you from Dr. Rao. The presentation was as valuable as the book.

And then, of course, I had to buy the book. I have dog-eared so many pages which had great ideas I wanted to study and remember that the book doesn't lay flat anymore. What makes the book so compelling is that Dr. Rao's interview style with his subjects was very successful since it was able to draw so many ideas out of the minds that created them. Equally as interesting and helpful is that the content of the entire book is laid out in numbered paragraphs according to each entrepreneur interviewed with many of those paragraphs containing their own $1,000,000, $10,000,000, $100,000,000 and $1,000,000,000 ideas.

This is one of those "you gotta read it" books.

A Great Read

This book is a great read for the lay person who wonders what makes some entrepreneurs so successful. I am not a business person, but found the lessons applicable for finding success in any pursuit. It is also fascinating to read about people who have had influence in our lives because of their innovations and insights.

Exceptional Book for Process Control

This book is a must have for anyone required to do process control as part of their role at an operational plant. It provides enough information to make it useful and easily understandable, but not so much technical information that it becomes redundant or boring.
It provides well thought out examples and pictures to demonstrate efficiently. This book also gives tips on how to properly step test a process as well as troubleshoot any problems that could affect control.
Anyone that is looking for a good book to futher develop their skills as a Process control Practioner should pick up a copy.

Great practical 'toolbox' book

You must remember what it was like at university? All those differential equations, then you found out about Laplace transforms (how much easier was that!), feedback control theory etc etc.

Then you graduated and landed on a factory floor somewhere and all of a sudden there wasn't a pole or a zero to be seen. And then you were asked to tune that control loop...

Fortunately there was that senior engineer who had already been there for a decade and knew *how* to do all of that practical stuff, and even better they could explain it so that you could *understand* what you were doing.

This book is like that senior engineer. Full of the 'good stuff' explained in a respectful conversational way to help you understand what you are reading. I find that many books raise the, "but what if such and such happens..." type of questions in my mind and then don't offer any solutions. With this book I found that either those questions actually got answered directly, or at least it gave me enough information so that I could make some reasonable assumptions so I wouldn't be too far off the mark.

Highly recommended.

Worth every penny if you want a nice practical reminder on how to get your loops working

I do real time control and this book is geared more for large industrial plants, but the principles involved are exactly the same. If you haven't had to do control for years you might end up being rusty on exactly how to apply state space, z, or laplace. This book manages to explain practical control theory without resorting to the higher maths mentioned. It provides a set of simple rules of thumb for setting up and tuning control systems, do's and donts, and examples of real world cascaded control systems that tend to fight each other. Worth every penny if you want a nice practical reminder on how to get your loops working. It covers pressure/flow/ temperature and storage tank type control systems, and points out that there are actually 3 completely different types of PID controller, which is something I have not seen in any other literature.
