A must-read for all math teachers to hone our craft

I teach high school math in a resource room setting. Most of my students are learning disabled in math enough so that they are not successful in co-taught math (with regular education and special education teachers). - - - This book shows me the experiences my students have not had, even with me. I'm so excited to start Number Talks for 15 minutes of the 90 minute classes. Most of my students have not memorized facts or they're all jumbled. On the ACT/SAT or other college entrance tests, there isn't an option (accommodation) for a calculator. Therefore, it will be essential to puzzle out solutions that accurately calculate problems! To discuss various ways we solve algebra equations.

This book is one of the best that I have seen that gives practical tips about implementing number talks in the middle grades. Most of the other books that I saw seemed geared toward the primary grades. I am going to try to implement number talks this fall in my classroom. This book will assist me immensely.

About the Author
Eileen John is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Louisville, specializing in aesthetics and philosophy of literature. Her essays have appeared in the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Philosophy and Literature, and The Henry James Review.

Dominic McIver Lopes is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of Understanding Pictures (1996) and co-editor of the Routledge Companion to Aesthetics (2000) and Imagination, Philosophy, and the Arts (2003). He is also co-editor, with Berys Gaut, of the Blackwell series New Directions in Aesthetics.

I suppose you can't please everyone, but this anthology provides a good overview of the field. The essays chosen for inclusion are thoughtful and varied. Just take a look through the table of contents and you'll understand its breadth. Its first chapter pays homage to some classical thinkers and their works. Its a respectful gesture that proves the enduring importance of works like The Republic, written in another context and before the style of modern academia came into its own. The next chapters deal with how we define and classify literature. More focused segments on the components of literature itself follow. The collection manages to maintain coherence and focus, so you feel the works were chosen intentionally. Best of all, the texts are condensed to be more focused and straightforward. It's a gift to be able to actually get through a piece in one sitting. The end result is that you can cover a variety of subjects and navigate adjacencies as you please. The goal of philosophy instruction, as I see it, should be to encourage exploration. This book allow that, meanwhile giving students a working knowledge of notable theorists and their works.

It's also a rather significant volume, with a great deal of different texts. I could see it being used as a catch-all reference for beginning and intermediate students of the field. It gives you the foundation you need to advance to more specialized books related to your interest or academic focus. Since it's clearly marketed as an anthology, I am not going to insult the editors by pointing out minutia I would have liked to seen included. Frankly, I am nowhere near the level of expertise necessary to do so. I would prefer a general overview to obscure and narrowly-targeted pieces that were frankly never intended for mass audiences, and woud lose their intricacy if given a fleeting treatment.

The font is readable and definitely aided by the two-column layout. Once again, the presentational approach foregrounds the content and gives it the attention it deserves. The book, because of its readability and core value, has deepened my interest in the field. I see reason for average people - especially those who value the arts in their daily lives - to pick this one up. It's thorough and comprehensive. It begs important questions about fiction, characterization, criticism, and more. Take a look, and think critically about what you read - in this volume, and everywhere else.

does not cover the whole field

The size of this book and the subtitle give the impression that this book covers the whole field. It doesn't. This hodgepodge of Ordinary Language and other approaches to the philosophy of literature is not the whole picture. See "A Book Worth Reading" for a different and systematic approach to this new branch of philosophy.

The articles in this anthology are almost all by philosophers who have only a passing knowledge of literature. The results are sophistic and at time sophomoric.

Missing also are some famous contributions to the field, such as Sartre's What is Literature? a book which raises some serious problems for literature. Also, the work of John M. Ellis.

If you can afford it, buy all four books. If not, you're better off with A Book Worth Reading.

Heather LeFevre is a modern marketer who earned her stripes working as a brand and communications strategist. Must read for strategists and thinkers

Brain Surfing is aptly named. As I read it, I wondered how many different parts of my brain would be lighting up were I to be hooked up to one of those um brain scanny thingamajigs. Heather LeFevre, a highly respected ad world veteran, has written a book that takes your brain on the journey of a lifetime, around the world, through the brains of ten spectacular thinkers (including Heather's), and into the most fabulous abstract and applied thoughts about strategy, branding, and heck, life itself.

Heather writes in a brisk, bold style, splicing together the multiple narratives of travel, the people she meets, her own and their ideas, and case studies in an easy to read, thought provoking fashion. Confession of an idea addict: I've already started reading three other books and magazine articles based on Heather's implicit recommendations in these pages--and let me tell you, she's got great taste in her own reading, too. This is my one quibble: I would have loved a reading list. Maybe Heather can write an annotated bibliography up and post it on her website.

So, what's the gist? Well, after stints at the world's top advertising agencies where she graduated from earning her chops to becoming a respected thought leader, Heather decided she wanted to broaden her horizons even more by picking the brains of top people who had impressed her or touched her professional life. So she reached out to a bunch of them and asked if she could crash their lives for a while. Tag along. Do a day in the life. Since these were awesome folk, they said: Sure! (Actually, not all of them did, but, spoiler alert: the ones who ended up in the book did.) So she traveled around the world, sat in on these folks' meetings, got to see how they worked, lived, interacted with clients, and engaged each and every one in conversations about best practices, big ideas, and the future.

This is a Think Big, inspired book that you will read at a feverish page flipping pitch but also in spurts because you periodically have to face the Big Dilemma of: I WANT TO KEEP READING versus I MUST WRITE DOWN HOW HEATHER'S INSIGHTS ARE INFORMING MY THINKING ABOUT PROBLEM X. (Take deep breaths. It's gonna be ok.) Big clients, big ideas, guerilla marketing, work-life balance, strategy in the digital age--you name it, Heather and her strategist mentors have thought about it and thought it about more deeply and more entertainingly than you could possibly imagine before picking up Brain Surfing.

I highly recommend this book. Final note: I bought the hard copy, which immediately gave me a free Kindle edition. I recommend doing this--you're going to want to make notes and have this book be its own conversation starter on your desk, but you're also going to want to have it to hand whenever you have downtime so you can dive in. Enjoy!

Very well written and inspiring book. Read it and you will want to explore the world and your brain!!

This is not your typical business/strategy book that you start reading but you never finish because it is not interesting enough or you feel it doesn't add anything new to your life. This is one of those books that once that you start reading it you can't stop. I decided to read this book on my flight from NYC to Seattle, my initial plan was to read this book for about 2-3 hours and devote the rest of my flight time to watch the Seahawks game, well, that didn't happen, once I started reading this book I couldn't stop reading it, before I knew it, it was almost half time of the Hawks game and I hadn't watched the game at all, but I had read half of this book. By the time we landed I had finished this book and even though I had been on a plane for over 6 hours I felt inspired by this book to take another plane and explore new places, not just geographical places but also places in the brain, heart and soul of experts in my field and myself, the same way Heather did it. After reading this book you will not only have learnt about Marketing Strategy, this book will inspire you to get outside of your area of comfort and explore the world and the minds of others and yourself. The book is really well written and combines perfectly the personal travel journey that Heather embarked with the business/marketing/strategy concepts and ideas of 10 brilliant strategist (Heather included).

What an amazing adventure and a crash course on self-exploration?! Every turn of the page feels like I am on the journey with the author. And, as a strategist, I find myself questioning my own expertise throughout this book, moving more and more into a state of curiosity, and this ride is full of learnings and life lessons. ...I am very glad that I read [this] as I rather enjoyed it and found it very useful from a National Health Service (NHS) dispensing perspective and as a manager of an NHS audiology service. The clue is in the title- this book is about selling hearing aids- very much in a quality way. It takes you through the journey from first contact with the patient, gathering patient history and understanding their difficulties, conducting assessment, discussing the results and closing the sale. This book is packed with resources and references current and past research…Much use is made of the 'Bright Ideas' sections in the book which are tips on practice of concise summaries of the text. This helps break up what could have been a dry text but isn't. In fact, this book manages to perform a neat trick, in that it is far from simplistic in content but easy to read. It holds the attention to the end...I would recommend this book for any professional involved in the hearing aid dispensing process, especially those embarking on a career. About the Author
Brian Taylor, Au.D. is currently the Director of Practice Development & Clinical Affairs for Unitron. He is responsible for all best practice initiatives and customer loyalty programs for Unitron in the United States. Over the past 20 years he has dispensed hearing aids in both retail and medical settings, including Rockford Clinic and Sonus. Prior to his current position, he was the Director of Professional Development for Amplifon and served as their Global Training Manager in Milan, Italy.

Dr. Taylor has written and lectured extensively on several topics, including practice management and evidence-based hearing aid selection and fitting approaches. Brian holds an Au.D. from Central Michigan University and a master's degree in Audiology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He currently resides in Minneapolis.

this book is both an excellent starting point on how to sell hearing aids and also a refresher for those who may have strayed to far into the flogging area.
