Enlightening Text

This book is a good follow-up to Gyatrul Rinpoche's commentary on portions of Karma Chagme's 17th century text, "The Union of Mahamudra and Dzogchen." The 2 volumes are entitled: "Naked Awareness" and "A Spacious Path to Freedom." All 3 are translated by B. Alan Wallace and, I believe that, the introductions make the connection between the two original texts. "Natural Liberation" and is attributed to the earlier master Padmasambhava. However, even the 3 together are not a complete exposition of the Union. Chokyi Rinpoche also wrote a small commentary on Karma Chagme's text entitled: "The Union of Mahamudra and Dzogchen." All 4 of these books are well worth reading. They are among the clearest and pithiest of currently available English translations of Mahamudra and Dzogchen texts and help one to not only understand their relationships, but more importantly to understand the underlying truths within them. They also provide considerable practical guidance for the practitioner. Mahamudra is contended to be the highest teaching within the Kagyu tradition (among the 4 Tibetan Buddhist traditions). Dzogchen is similarly regarded for the Nyingma tradition. Thus, such original works can be said to address the very highest Vajrayana (Tibetan Buddhist) teachings. It is obvious (even in translation) that both Karma Chagme and (the much celebrated and revered) Padmasambhava were great, enlightened masters. This volume contains a wealth of valuable material and is highly recommended.

Sometimes holding the Wish-Granting Gem in one's hand

Occasionally - very rarely - the wish-granting gem is placed in one's hands. This text, a skilful interweave of the root verses by Guru Padmasambhava and a commentary given recently on the US West Coast by the Ven. Gyatrul Rinpoche, is exactly one such opportunity. As a long-term practitioner of the D�d'jom Lineage of teachings, and translator to His Holiness Shenphen Dawa Norbu Rinpoche, I cannot too strongly recommend this book to all those who feel they would like to undertake the Buddhist path. The Ven. Gyatrul Rinpoche skilfully steers the practitioner - be they beginner or mature student - through the various reefs of hope and fear attached to such an undertaking, and brings them clear to at least a vision of the path that leads to the other shore, beyond, and back again. He is to be thanked profoundly for his great compassion, humorous skill and wisdom.

Could have been made much better

I am fond of history tangled fictions and bought this book as it featured both Ashoka and Mahabharata. The book started off well but then the plot starts losing grip with the reader and strays into unnecessary details and events. The big secret that the author tries to build momentum to, really fizzles out at the end. All in all this is a mere time killer read, nothing great.

total waste of time

Author tried to mimic Dan Brown style of creating puzzles and clues. The comparison ends there, as Dan Brown accompanies it with a solid historical reference to support his theories. Chris on the other hand just describes the streets of Gurgaon, wild car chase (James Bond movie style), and caves. The conversations between the characters are meaningless. I regret spending my time reading all through the book to come to a pathetic, unbelievable secret.

A sincere attempt--but very disappointing due to far too many holes in the plot.

Reading the synopsis of the book, I felt I was in for a taut, gripping thriller. The book's concept is fascinating--Emperor Asoka discovers a secret from the times of the Mahabharata, contained in the so-called "Vimana Parva", detailing flying weapons capable of inflicting immense damage on enemies. Emperor Asoka then forms the "Brotherhood of the Nine" to safeguard this secret, (as well as the storehouse of these "vimanas" that they discover), to ensure it never falls into the wrong hands. The brotherhood thereby becomes a secret society of sorts, erasing all records of the "Vimana Parva" and handing down the secret within the society from generation to generation.

So far, so good. But cut to the present, and the plot and the riddles that have to be solved in order to get to the secret, become so repetitive after a point, its almost ridiculous. There are yawning holes in the plot, which, even if you work very hard to suspend disbelief, are way too irrational/ unbelievable/ fantastic.

A) Why on earth would any Indian member of the "Brotherhood of the Nine" willingly admit a Pakistani to share the secret? That too, a Pakistani scientist who has been involved in that country's nuclear program. It is unbelievable, given current geopolitical realities, that an Indian scientist would not see the risks inherent in so badly compromising India's security concerns.

B) One question which one keeps mentally asking is, Why could Asoka not have simply got the vimanas destroyed himself? There is no logical explanation given, as to why a storehouse of lethal weapons should be kept hidden, with supposedly difficult-to-solve clues pointing to where the site is. If such was the security in place, the only surprise of the novel is, why the vimanas were not discovered 1000, if not 2000 years ago!!

C) During the last stretches in the novel, the main protagonist and his sidekicks are held hostage by the LeT and forced to help them locate the weapon's hiding place, under duress. But this sense of blackmail, their abject fear for their lives, hardly comes through. It seems as if they are so fired up by solving the clues, they want to decipher it anyway. It is shown almost as an intellectual challenge, no attempt is made by them to slow things down, no hesitation shown at all in thinking what would happen if such powerful weapons falls into such villainous hands. By this time, it is pretty clear that the LeT is not going to let them go alive, so their feverish enthusiasm in finding the weapon's hiding place is just too illogical.

D) There is a completely redundant romance track which is shoe-horned in for God alone knows what reason.

To add to the above, there is a key error in the historical plotline of the novel, which would have us believe that the vimanas were manufactured on orders of the King of Magadha, who was fighting on the side of the Kauravas and who wanted to wreak havoc on the Pandava army. The only problem with this story: as per the Mahabharata, the King of Magadha fought WITH the Pandavas, AGAINST the Kauravas. Granted, the Mahabharata refers to Magadhan princes on both sides of the Great War, (probably different brothers/ cousins of the Magadhan royal family chose different sides), but the King himself is shown as having joined the Pandavas. The author could have easily chosen to base this plotline on another King who was unambiguously on the Kaurava side. One wonders why this wan't done, probably pointing to insufficient research on the Mahabharata itself.

Only ok for the beginner

The drawings are crude and not that easy to follow. The projects are illustrated nicely but steps are left out. I found myself having to jump around the chapters to find out what I needed to know about stripping and then re upholstering an old padded dining room chair. The photos of the materials were excellent but nothing was in simple step by step order for a beginner like myself. I don't care about projects created by other people and would rather have simple how to steps with only photos.

A must-read for all math teachers to hone our craft

I teach high school math in a resource room setting. Most of my students are learning disabled in math enough so that they are not successful in co-taught math (with regular education and special education teachers). - - - This book shows me the experiences my students have not had, even with me. I'm so excited to start Number Talks for 15 minutes of the 90 minute classes. Most of my students have not memorized facts or they're all jumbled. On the ACT/SAT or other college entrance tests, there isn't an option (accommodation) for a calculator. Therefore, it will be essential to puzzle out solutions that accurately calculate problems! To discuss various ways we solve algebra equations.

This book is one of the best that I have seen that gives practical tips about implementing number talks in the middle grades. Most of the other books that I saw seemed geared toward the primary grades. I am going to try to implement number talks this fall in my classroom. This book will assist me immensely.

About the Author
Eileen John is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Louisville, specializing in aesthetics and philosophy of literature. Her essays have appeared in the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Philosophy and Literature, and The Henry James Review.

Dominic McIver Lopes is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of Understanding Pictures (1996) and co-editor of the Routledge Companion to Aesthetics (2000) and Imagination, Philosophy, and the Arts (2003). He is also co-editor, with Berys Gaut, of the Blackwell series New Directions in Aesthetics.

I suppose you can't please everyone, but this anthology provides a good overview of the field. The essays chosen for inclusion are thoughtful and varied. Just take a look through the table of contents and you'll understand its breadth. Its first chapter pays homage to some classical thinkers and their works. Its a respectful gesture that proves the enduring importance of works like The Republic, written in another context and before the style of modern academia came into its own. The next chapters deal with how we define and classify literature. More focused segments on the components of literature itself follow. The collection manages to maintain coherence and focus, so you feel the works were chosen intentionally. Best of all, the texts are condensed to be more focused and straightforward. It's a gift to be able to actually get through a piece in one sitting. The end result is that you can cover a variety of subjects and navigate adjacencies as you please. The goal of philosophy instruction, as I see it, should be to encourage exploration. This book allow that, meanwhile giving students a working knowledge of notable theorists and their works.

It's also a rather significant volume, with a great deal of different texts. I could see it being used as a catch-all reference for beginning and intermediate students of the field. It gives you the foundation you need to advance to more specialized books related to your interest or academic focus. Since it's clearly marketed as an anthology, I am not going to insult the editors by pointing out minutia I would have liked to seen included. Frankly, I am nowhere near the level of expertise necessary to do so. I would prefer a general overview to obscure and narrowly-targeted pieces that were frankly never intended for mass audiences, and woud lose their intricacy if given a fleeting treatment.

The font is readable and definitely aided by the two-column layout. Once again, the presentational approach foregrounds the content and gives it the attention it deserves. The book, because of its readability and core value, has deepened my interest in the field. I see reason for average people - especially those who value the arts in their daily lives - to pick this one up. It's thorough and comprehensive. It begs important questions about fiction, characterization, criticism, and more. Take a look, and think critically about what you read - in this volume, and everywhere else.

does not cover the whole field

The size of this book and the subtitle give the impression that this book covers the whole field. It doesn't. This hodgepodge of Ordinary Language and other approaches to the philosophy of literature is not the whole picture. See "A Book Worth Reading" for a different and systematic approach to this new branch of philosophy.

The articles in this anthology are almost all by philosophers who have only a passing knowledge of literature. The results are sophistic and at time sophomoric.

Missing also are some famous contributions to the field, such as Sartre's What is Literature? a book which raises some serious problems for literature. Also, the work of John M. Ellis.

If you can afford it, buy all four books. If not, you're better off with A Book Worth Reading.
