About the Author
Payam Nabarz, a Persian-born Sufi and practicing Dervish, holds a Ph.D. from Oxford University and is carrying out postdoctoral research there on genetics and cancer. He is a Druid in the Grove of the Order of the Bards, Ovates, and Druids; a member of the Golden Dawn Occult Society; and a revivalist of the Temple of Mithras. He lives in England.

A Book that Shines like a Star

Dr. Nabarz out did himself in the creation of an expansive reference book on the stars. The stars hold a breadth and wonder unlike anything else. Since the dawn of dawns we have looked up to the dark sky and seen them. With so much witchcraft focused on the power of Luna's reflected light, or the other great 7 planets... this was a book whose time has been waiting.

It makes a great reference book. It has stellar poetry from Zorastrian texts, Orphic hymns and much more. But this book reads more like a thesis of information rather than tapping into the author's own passion or a grimoire of the magick. I say that with regret because you can tell this author's knowledge is vast. However, I hesitate as the cover says to call this book practical. The rites involve memorizing large astral temple plans, holding yourself in awkward positions and evoking stars under the night sky in dim lit conditions. But when did any of that stop a mage before?

I think Dr. Nabarz has a voice that is aching to come out and shine. I would like to see him write brief original and progressive rituals that can be used by adepts, lay persons and aspirants. It is out there, and I know it would bedazzle us. Dr. Nabarz's accumulation and dispersion of knowledge makes this book a hearty reference and guide for making your own rituals though. But I wish I could have things other than what others have written for a practical guide. This is the one area of opportunity-- You will need to re-write and edit each ritual in order receive adequate benefits from them.

This isn't a bad thing. Originality should be the quest of all of us. But there is something to be said for edited, brief to the point spells spiced with hearty reference. That is what I was genuinely hoping for when I paid [...] for this book. This book was written as the culmination of Dr. Nabarz's hierophancy for the Fellowship of Isis. But it could have used a less scholarly approach. I've utilized the draft and the book itself for such a reference and it works great. The spells will enhance perception and are quite inspiring, but I think that although the topic is the stars, the words, and awkward positions detract from the magic practicality of the tome.

The rites are a bit, involved... however the book itself is a great tome and a worthy addition to anyone's library but it is more focused on reference than original works, which is not always a bad thing. Well done.

Those Magical Stars

This one of the best books I have read to date. What can I say it resonates with me. My pre-Pagan spirituality haled from the Middle East. Author, Payam Nabarz gives the reader several rituals dedicated to the stars, planets, moon and constellation. All of them are complete and easy for anyone from beginner-expert to follow and do. The rituals can be performed individually or with groups. The author encourages the reader to modify the rituals to get the most out of them. The author also gives the mythology behind the rituals and the mythology derives from many sources such as Zoroastrian, Egyptian,Greek and Roman. Very thorough! I hope to see more from this author. Not only is the book packed with information but it is loaded with sources for further research.

Ever since Ancient times the stars have been used for divination. The Caesars of Rome valued anyone who could accurately read the stars and interpret what they mean. Some of the Caesars would interview the diviners personally if they failed then they faced the real possibility of being executed. But things went further then that the stars were the center of ancient ritual. People could draw power from those rituals.

After the introduction the author explains the standard opening and closing for the rituals. It is the same every time and it is a variation of the Lesser banishing pentagram ritual in a way. The first part of the opening is the tree meditation which is derived from the Celtic sources and draws energy from the earth and celestial spheres into the practitioner. Next is calling the quarters and then a reading of the Hymns of Orpheus.

The first right is the Orion -Horus Right. As with each of the rituals the author gives the outline and then he gives a thorough explanation of the mythology behind the ritual. He equates Orion with Horus and he explains the similarity and the difference between the two deities. The book is chock full of rituals and to list them all would be far too exhaustive. In closing I would like to say that our souls come from the stars and that each of us has a star in the sky. Our life's journey is to return to the stars. This book is a great guide. Buy the book. The rituals are sensible, practical and easy to follow. You will enjoy the results.

Original and Thought Provoking

I wasn't sure about what to expect, but this book was a great find. Though I wouldn't use any of the rituals exactly as is, it provides an excellent reference and point of beginning for creating your own rituals to explore the stars with. It is rare to find practical books which explores pagan ritual from a practitioners perspective and which is not absolutely aimed at beginners, Nabarz seems to have recognised the need for material for the growing number of people who are seeking something beyond the beginners level. This is an original and thought provoking book, which does just that - and so I recommend it to those looking for something which is ideal if you already have experience and knowledge and now want to explore deeper and further.

About the Author

Scott Empson is the associate chair of the Bachelor of Applied Information Systems Technology degree program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he teaches Cisco routing, switching, and network design courses in a variety of different programs—certificate, diploma, and applied degree—at the postsecondary level. Scott is also the program coordinator of the Cisco Networking Academy Program at NAIT, a Regional Academy covering central and northern Alberta. He has earned three undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in English; a Bachelor of Education, again with a major in English/Language Arts; and a Bachelor of Applied Information Systems Technology, with a major in Network Management. Scott is currently completing his Master of Education from the University of Portland. He holds several industry certifications, including CCNP, CCAI, Network+, and CEH. Prior to instructing at NAIT, he was a junior/senior high school English/Language Arts/Computer Science teacher at different schools throughout Northern Alberta. Scott lives in Edmonton, Alberta, with his wife, Trina, and two children, Zachariah and Shaelyn.

Hans Roth is an instructor in the electrical engineering technology department at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Hans has been with the college for 13 years and teaches in both the engineering technology and IT areas. He has been with the Cisco Networking Academy since 2000, teaching CCNP curricula. Previous to teaching, Hans spent 15 years in R&D/product development designing microcontroller-based control systems for consumer products as well as for the automotive and agricultural industries.

Good for command line lookup.

As the title states, if you have questions about certain commands you can easily look them up in this little guide.

Only complaint is that (and again with ciscopress) they don't offer you a digital copy. There are other companies that give you a CD loaded with FREE extra content and a PDF copy of the book.

Good Quick Command Reference

This book has been a great easy reference for learning Cisco switch commands during a new datacenter project. It's well organized by function. As an improvement, I would suggest expanding on real-world syntax examples.

Good content, terrible Kindle format

The Kindle version of this book has every single table of commands formatted as an image, and not text. That means it cannot be scaled, and reading the book on a PC results in very difficult to read tables. The tables are the real content of the book - ALL of the commands reside in these tables, and not a single bit of it is formatted as text. Other books in this series, like CCNA Portable Command Guide, have at least the vast majority of tables formatted as scalable text. This book is almost entirely image-based. Hopefully this will be changed in an updated version.

Hauck, who has written about mystical experiences (Haunted Places), explores the tablet's message, drawing primarily on the work of classical scholars such as the Persian alchemist Zoroaster, the 16th-century physician Paracelsus, Pharaoh Akhenaten and the pre-Christian alchemist Maria Prophetissa to illuminate his substantial review of the history and principles of alchemy. In the Hermetic tradition, the physical and metaphysical worlds are mirror images: the transformation of a base metal into gold corresponds to the evolution of an ego-dominated person into one who possesses a permanent state of enlightened consciousness. Hauck's elucidation of the laws governing the refinement of energy, such as the Doctrine of Correspondence, the Seven Steps to Transformation and the Octave of Creation, will strike a chord with students of modern esoteric traditions such as the Fourth Way and Theosophy. His explanations of alchemical principles are difficult to understand, however, and will require scrutiny on the part of readers new to the material. Highly recommended for larger libraries, or where books on occult traditions are popular.

Good introduction for beginners

This book serves as a plain language introduction to alchemical symbolism and concepts. It includes an English translation and line-by-line explication of the Emerald Tablet. It also devotes a complete chapter to each of the seven operations of alchemy and includes several black and white illustrations from traditional treatises on alchemy. Unfortunately, the author spends a little too much time attempting to demonstrate his personal alchemical achievements, with results that can be downright silly ("Those who know do not speak; those who speak do not know" -Lao Tzu). The suggested exercises are unhelpful (for greater benefit, I would recommend taking up a discipline like yoga), the inclusion of celebrity star signs (not to mention a subchapter called "The calcination of William Shatner") undermines the credibility of the whole, and the absence of a strong editor shows up in several avoidable errors (using the word "courtesan" for "courtier", referring to Antonin Artaud as a 19th-century figure, etc.). Still, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a basic guide to alchemical processes and symbolism.

Good Start

The book is most suitable for people who are new to alchemy because it is written in a very simple language. In this book Dennis takes the verses from the Emerald Tablet, as a pattern for seven stages of alchemical transformation, and applies it to different areas of human development. He provides numerous examples which are intended to facilitate the understanding of each stage of alchemical transformation, but in my opinion, some of these examples don't quite make it.

The book will nevertheless be very helpful to a beginner to get an idea about the seven stages of alchemical transformation - to actually know them, one will have to experience them - and the later stages of alchemical transformation seem to be beyond the scope of this book - at least I have that impression based on the examples provided.

Finally a transparent alchemy book

If you've tried to understand the alchemical and Hermetic
traditions from primary sources, or translations thereof,
you have probably been as frustrated as I was. Those sources
are not written to be read by the uninitiated or even the
semi-initiated. Hauck has tied the tradition together from
its earliest origins and made it understandable. I looked for
my copy of _The Emerald Tablet_ to be able to cite details for
this review, but it's making the rounds of my circle of friends
right now. I may just have to buy another.

About the Author
A. Ravve received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Utah in 1950, and was Post Doctoral Fellow at both the University of Michigan (1950-1951) and Iowa State University (1951-1952). He worked for 28 years with Continental Group, Incorporated, mainly as a Research Manager, and subsequently as Senior Consultant in syntheses and utilization of polymeric materials. He also taught evening courses in polymer chemistry at several institutions of higher learning in the Chicago area, from 1960-1991. Currently he does consulting in polymer chemistry.

Buy this book only if you are forced to!

I bought this book because it was the prescribed text for a class I took. It doesn't tell you anything in detail other than what you already know and keeps reffering to journal papers for every little thing. The organization of material is haphazard, and its very dificult to read through the list of names that keep appearing. Anyone who wants to understand Polymer chemistry, please look for some other book.This looks like the work of someone who has obtained a long list of papers on polymers and has written whatever he could gather from a glance at them, and did not even bother to proofread it once.
