Be happy

This little book contains 10 meditative, philosophic essays on happiness. Each essay talks about a different "practice," or mind set, that can aid in increasing happiness. In the first essay, for example, we are urged to follow our instincts, our inner desires, rather than dutifully obeying what society and our intellect tells us we must do.

Kehoe is not a psychologist so do not expect a scientific approach. Instead he writes from the perspective of one who has lived a successful and happy life, and who has thought long and read widely about the subject.

I recommend reading a chapter a day to give your mind a chance to think over the various messages. You might even find you want to read the book several times to absorb the material. The text is certainly not boring, has pertinent quotes scattered through it, and is illustrated with interesting pictures to meditate on.

A small book with some wonderful insights into happiness

I have read, and enjoyed, several of John Kehoe's book and this one is no exception. In some of his other books like, "Mind Power into the 20th Century" and his most recent work, "Quantum Warrior" John uses a style that is quite interactive and full of great lessons that need to be put into use. In order to gain the benefits of the material in those two books, the reader needs to be quite pro-active and do the work physically.

This book, "The Practice of Happiness", is not only smaller and shorter in length, the style is also different in that it is more of a discourse - not a scientific discourse; rather, it is written from the point of view of somebody who has learned from the school of life.

John Kehoe a uses aspects of his personal life mixed in with quotes and aphorisms from many sources to share a wisdom about happiness that many know, yet so few truly practice. There are many wonderful quotes in the book, but I would like to share something from Mr. Kehoe himself, "Inner harmony and happiness are not just for ourselves: they are gifts that we give to the world. And here a great truth is revealed."

If you could use more happiness in your life, this book would be a great place to start.

Hands down one of the best books breaking down the different componets of the cultural & ritualistic ties of antiquity. Diop's theory of the polarization of the Southern and Northern hemispheres of the earth along the continent of Asia acting as a "zone of confluence" is a precise outlining for the different practices of social organization as they existed in the past. He goes into the studies of many 17th century socialist such as JJ Bachofen, Lewis H. Morgan, and Friedrich Engels to show the many discrepancies created out of preassumption of the characteristics of people who they never tooken in to study, such as the many societies existing within the interior of Africa.

It seems the main theory that he wishes to debunk is that of an parallel development of social organization existing between the hemispheres. This logically could not have existed due to the many difficulties a people living in two different climates varying from an abundance of resources to the disperation of a scarcity would have practicing the same modes of production and consumption. As an natural habitat causes for an particular adjustment to the environment, two modes of polar disciplines arise, in the southern hemisphere the practice of agriculture develops as the main line of life maintience and wealth, while in the northern hemisphere the practice of horticulture takes a preeminence as the providing occupation. Thus the manifestion
of gender roles as we know them today was heavly dependant upon the different masculine or feminine traits it took to contribute to the necessitated occupations of a sendentary agriculturalist lifestyle or that of a nomadic & pastrolist one.

Although Dr.Clarke NEVER dissapoints.

This book is deep and complex. One has to read it to grasp and understand. Anyway, Diop essentially divides the world into two cradles - the Northern (patriarchal in character), and Southern (Black and matriarchal). He clearly demonstrates that matriarchy could only be found in Black populations, specifically in Africa, or other places subject to Black influence. European and Asiatic societies have a patriarchal regime because of the demanding nomadic lifestyle in the Eurasian steppes. The sedentary life of Blacks is what fueled great respect for women...the Black woman being the inventor of agriculture. Children often got their names from the mother's lineage. He clearly argues his facts by explaining dowry, fire worship, cremation, amazonism, etc. He gives thorough examples throughout.
This is not just another feel-good book from a zealous Afrocentrist. This is true scholarship! I am sure all readers will be convinced when they finish reading it. Islam, colonization, and Christianity have truely changed the Black world in terms of its matriarchal character. We should respect our women. In European and Asian history, you will never find anything resembling the armed Sudanese Kandake, the Angolan Nzinga, the Egyptian Hatshetsup and Tiye,...the list is endless. Perhaps it's matriarchy that fueled our ancient societies to become world powers in our glory days. We can only imagine. Can Africa ever really gain what it's lost? That's the question. In a way, I feel that Diop asks the same question.

LOVE the recipes, BUT....

I'm giving this 3 stars (neutral, in my opinion) because the recipes are missing ingredients and/or steps. When baking, this is critical! And there are at least two recipes missing things. The crepes call for water in the instructions but it isn't listed. For the blackberry chia muffins, adding almond milk is listed in the instructions but it's nowhere to be found in the ingredients list. This can absolutely ruin the recipe. I still have no idea how much almond milk to add and didn't realize until I was halfway through the recipe. Now, what to do?! I just find this annoying. A book that goes to print shouldn't have this many mistakes. Otherwise, I LOVE Laura. So I hate not being able to give this 5 stars. Such a bummer.

UPDATE: I tried adding 1 cup almond milk to the recipe 1/4 at a time. The muffins came out pretty awful. If anyone figures this out, please post the info. (Blackberry chia muffins)

Laura Miller steals the show with unique approach to food

I don't label myself as "Vegan." I just tend to eat more veggies than meat so I'm always on the look out for good recipes involving veggies.

Laura Miller steals the show with unique approach to food. I found her on Tastemade a couple years ago, doing a cooking show. Each episode was about 10 minutes (let the binge watching ensue), and here was this woman, who was genuinely EXCITED about food, totally goofy and being herself. She was not putting on a show like you would see on any cooking show on Food Network. She was just so relatable and that was refreshing. I just wanted to her hug and say thank you.

The first episode I saw was how to make chocolate avocado pudding. I was entralled---I'm lactose intolerent as of recently (3 years running) and I know what pudding tastes like. I was longing for some semblence of my comfort dessert and she hit the nail on the head with this.

She recently had a book signing in my town, and I got to meet this wonderful human being. She's introverted, all smiles and again, so relatable. She and her recipes just reflect the emodiment of goodness and how food can open up so many doors to feeling like your best self. I just made the cauliflower pizza and chocolate shake last night (which if you ate "normal" pizza and a chocolate shake you'd probably feel terrible and bloated, or in my case, like death, because of the dairy), and both were just SO great. The shake was dedcadent, and it was such a relief to have something so familiar, sans dairy, and know my body wouldn't try to kill me later.

Even if you aren't vegan, you will enjoy her recipes. They are filling and so packed with nutrients that you won't ever have to worry about feeling guilty eating them. She's all about eating food that is good, and helping you understand how it makes you feel good. That's it. So simple.

Just got this book in the mail yesterday, but I have read through it all and I am so eager to try everything! I'm not fully raw but look forward to trying these inventive and creative recipes! I've been a follower of Laura's work on YouTube for quite some time and am only sad she didn't include her (cooked) vegan chilli recipe, because I love that one so much, I suggest looking it up on YouTube - it's so delicious and hearty! But I love her unique take on raw food, as it's not just raw veggies and fruits, she gets really creative with a multitude of ingredients I've never heard of before. I'll be strongly recommending this book to everyone I know for healthier dining and dessert options!

Witold Wysota is a software architect and developer living in Poland. He started his adventure with Qt in 2004 when he joined QtForum.org and started answering questions about programming with Qt. Shortly afterwards, he became part of the moderator group of the forum. In 2006, together with the moderator team, he established QtCentre.org, which quickly became the largest community-driven support site devoted to Qt. For a number of years, he conducted commercial, academic, and public trainings and workshops and has been giving lectures on Qt, Qt Quick, and related technologies. He is a certified Qt developer and was a member of Qt Education Advisory Board with Nokia, where he helped prepare materials in order to use Qt in educational activities. Witold was also a technical reviewer for Foundations of Qt Development, Johan Thelin, Apress Publishing, a book about Qt 4, and an author of a couple of articles on programming with Qt. In real life, he is a passionate adept of Seven Star Praying Mantis, a traditional style of Chinese martial arts.

Lorenz Haas

Lorenz Haas is a passionate programmer who started his Qt career with Qt 3. Thrilled by Qt's great community, especially the one at QtCentre.org, he immersed himself in this framework, became one of the first certified Qt developers and specialists, and turned his love for Qt into his profession. Lorenz is now working at a medium-sized IT company based in Erlangen, Germany, as a lead software architect. good practical beginner's guide

Very good book, filled with practical examples. The book covers wide range of topics e.g. scripting, networking and has even Qt Creator shortcuts between the lines ;) I enjoyed reading the book but advance users will probably skim through some chapters and for complete beginners I'd recommend "Foundations of Qt Development" book.

About the Author
Arnold Henry, former NCAA Division I basketball player, is a nonfiction author, a motivational speaker and a skill development basketball trainer who strives to inspire youth through the use of his personal life experience. He was born on February 11, 1985 on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia where he was presented the 2001 National Junior Male Basketball Player of the Year award. Two years later, upon completing a post-secondary year at Massanutten Military Academy of Woodstock, Virginia, Arnold accepted an offer from the University of Vermont, where he became the first Saint Lucian freshman to achieve a full basketball scholarship. In spring 2009, Arnold obtained his bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems. Arnold Henry has held multiple book signings and motivational speaking engagements in cities across Canada, England, Mexico, and Saint Lucia. He was one of the featured authors of Calgary’s 16th annual Wordfest. When he’s not writing or working on his public speaking skills, he’s volunteering his time using his words of empowerment to motivate foster kids and at risk youths of selected programs across the city. Arnold congratulations on another good read. As with the last book I was did not want to stop reading. I must say though this one was bitter sweet in my opinion but as I told you I will not judge you.

I am happy that you made it this far in life considering what you have been through. The main thing is that you are aware, acknowleged and acted which is a great trait. You are amazing. I am certain you will inspire others the way you did me. I pray the good Lord continues to guides and protects you so that you can be the father that you never had to your son.
