About the Author

Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Dr. Schmalleger holds degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Ohio State University, having earned both a master’s (1970) and doctorate (1974) from Ohio State University, with a special emphasis in criminology. From 1976 to 1994, he taught criminal justice courses at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. For the last 16 of those years, he chaired the university’s Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice. He was named Professor Emeritus in 2001. As an adjunct professor with Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, Schmalleger helped develop the university’s graduate program in security administration and loss prevention. He taught courses in that curriculum for more than a decade. Schmalleger has also taught in the New School for Social Research’s online graduate program, helping to build the world’s first electronic classrooms in support of distance learning through computer telecommunications. An avid Internet user, Schmalleger is also the creator of a number of award-winning websites, including one that supports this textbook ( www.mycjlab.com ).

Frank Schmalleger is the author of numerous articles and many books, including the widely used Criminal Justice Today (Pearson, 2013), Criminology Today (Pearson, 2012), and Criminal Justice: A Brief Introduction (Pearson, 2014). See his website at www.schmalleger.com .

Daniel E. Hall, J.D., Ed.D., a native of Indiana, earned his bachelor’s degree at Indiana University, his Juris Doctor at Washburn University, and his Doctor of Education at the University of Central Florida. He has been on the faculties of the Department of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies at the University of Central Florida and the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Toledo, where he was chair and associate professor. My opinion

I think the book is written with law students in mind. Just keep in mind criminal justice students are not all going to law school. Some areas in the book could have just been simplier

I had rented this book for a class where I received an A+ in the class! The book did what it was supposed to do plus I barely opened the book cause I knew a lot of what was in the book already. I opened it maybe 4 times out of the 7 week course. Thank you!

Worse written textbook EVER

Worse written textbook EVER!!! Very often confusing and is presented in an illogical order. For instance, the text taught incohate crimes before basic crimes. Then on page 119 - 120 the text gives you a critical thinking exercise. Basically it is a fact pattern which has one person getting arrested for speeding. Seems improbable since speeding is an infraction. The fact pattern asks the student to apply the mere-preparation test, the substantial step test and the overt act test, however the text does not mention one of those tests in the reading. Tsk Tsk Mr. Schmalleger. If you are an instructor and reading this review only use this book as a text if you hate your students.

The documentary biography of Jacques Legardeur de Saint-Pierre, an officer in the Troupes de la Marine, who served throughout New France, sheds new light on the business activity of French colonial officers stationed in the West. Many of the more than one hundred previously untranslated documents in Jacques Legardeur de Saint-Pierre demonstrate the extent and profitability of Saint-Pierre's pursuit of business activities while he was performing official duties in eighteenth-century French North America. The quest for profit permeated Saint-Pierre's career, particularly his command of the Western Sea Post after he succeeded the fabled Pierre Gaultier de Varennes et de la Verendrye in 1750. Saint-Pierre and his secret partners Governor-General Jacques-Pierre de Taffanel de La Jonquiere, Intendant Francois Bigot, and Meret, secretary to La Jonquiere, used their positions to engage in extensive trade, especially in brandy, with the Cree and Assiniboine northwest of Lake Superior. About the Author

The late Joseph L. Payser was Professor Emeritus of French at Indiana University South Bend and co-director of the French Michilimackinac Research Project.

An interesting work and excellent resource

Few episodes are as momentous as twenty-one year old George Washington's delivery of an English peacetime demand that the French vacate Belle Rivière (the Ohio Valley) in late 1753. It was penned by Virginia Lieutenant-Governor Dinwiddie, a shareholder (with Washington's elder brother Lawrence) in the newly formed Ohio Company, which coveted land also claimed (but sparsely occupied) by France.

Washington embarked with seven men on an arduous winter journey few English colonists attempted (90+% lived within 50 miles of the Atlantic). Traveling via Chiningué (Logstown) and the French post of Venango, he arrived in a snowstorm 11 December 1753 at Fort Le Boeuf (Waterford, Pennsylvania: 260 miles northwest of Winchester, Virginia). He was cordially received by the French commander, who Washington described as "an elderly gentleman, and has much the air of a soldier." Assured the summons had been forwarded to Québec, he was given a written reply for Dinwiddie ("As to the summons you send me to retire, I do not think myself obliged to obey it") three days later. Washington's return trip (he narrowly escaped death after falling into the ice-laden Allegheny) is well known, as is Dinwiddie's summons and the French reply. The gauntlet for war had been thrown.

This book documents the life of the "elderly gentleman:" Jacques Legardeur de St-Pierre, an officer, entrepreneur, and Chevalier de St-Louis more than twice Washington's age. The text (amply illustrated and annotated) is organized to reflect the subject's broad experience:

Legardeur de St-Pierre is a prime example of a officer class that had routinely traveled west for over a hundred years. He was recalled from Fort Rouge in Manitoba (1,800 miles from Montréal) 4 June 1753 and, after another 470 mile winter journey from Montréal, arrived at Fort Le Boeuf eight days before Washington. While Washington would narrowly escape death at Fort Necessity (1754) and Monongahela (1755), fate was less kind to Legardeur de St-Pierre: he died at the Battle of Lac St-Sacrement (8 Sept 1755).

Good specific info on paph species

This book is just what I was looking for. It describes the native environment (locale, elevation, sunlight, preferred habitats, etc) for dozens of paph species. It also gives detailed information on the seasonal variations in temp, humidity, sunlight, etc each would encounter in the wild. I've found this to be a valuable resource when one of my paphs doesn't bloom for me and I want to fine tune the culture.

Highly opinionated and superficial

Blah. Joyner uses the preface to justify the book's obvious shortcomings: "It is comparatively economical in price and size. That's the reason for it's length, the lack of companion CDs, lyrics, and color photographs. Paper, copyright permissions, and color printing cost a lot of money." So be aware, this is a low-budget item in various respects. It's just barely substantial enough for a school to get away with telling parents and the district BoE that the subject was taught. If you want something that does more than scratch the surface, or provides more than the absolute minimum of textbook production value, look elsewhere. The British Invasion deserves more than 9 pages plus a couple of song analyses.

One might think that, given the apparent importance of brevity, Mr. Joyner would skew the ratio of fact and opinion more in the direction of fact, particularly when some of the opinions he expresses are utterly misguided. To wit: "Stadium rock continued through the 1980s with bands such as Styx, Rush, Boston, Kansas, and Heart. The music of these bands was inherently formulaic and corporate and would lead to major underground rebellions along the way with musical styles such as disco, punk, and grunge."

Rush's music is formulaic and corporate? Disco was a rebellion against bands like Styx or Kansas? Such assertions throw every other opinion in the text into doubt. Also, the famous 3-song Yes album is titled "Close To The Edge", not "Closer To The Edge". Let's call that one a typo, but speaking of that band, it's a strange editorial decision to make the heading of the section about them "Rick Wakeman and Yes". Why put it that way? Rick's a legend, but to suggest that he was the primary source of Yes's prog sound is a real stretch. "Roundabout", which is arguably the band's most popular classic progressive rock song, features some great playing by Wakeman, but it was composed by Jon Anderson and Steve Howe. Many of Yes's records don't even feature Wakeman as a band member, and his solo efforts made far less of a contribution to the progressive rock genre than the band that made him famous, let alone King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc.

The edition I have is called the "Jersey City Edition" but in the section about jazz-rock fusion there is no mention of one of the absolute founding fathers of the genre, guitarist Al DiMeola, who is from Jersey City. Also unseen in the text is PM Dawn, a couple of Jersey City boys whose contribution to hip-hop is worth at least a sentence or two.

The writing is decent. The artists and styles that are mentioned are certainly essential. But I have reservations about recommending this book for classroom use, and certainly not for personal education.

This book does not look bad at all. It seems to provide a more or less thorough history of american popular music. It is organized and would be a good study guide. The first edition came out in 1993, so all or most of the information in this volume cannot have just been ripped off the web.

The Joyner book an excellent survey of popular music. I chose it for a college general survey course on popular music I taught in Sping 10--it was a great class and the students reacted well to the book. Joyner treats each genre of popular music in a chronological manner, showing their development and influence on each another. The section on courtry music is especially interesting. ITunes links are provided to songs covered in the text. A number of the ITunes links are not the same arrangements discussed in the text, but they are easy enough to track down. I give this book a high recommendation, especially to anyone looking for a general overview of American popular music.
