The Long Walk....

A good read. I cannot give it more credit due to that there is much controversy over it's bonifidies...it certainly is entertaining, and captures quickly the readers attention, holds your attention from chapter to chapter, and draws the reader into its complex desert sea of people and issues confronting the group throughout their journey. I think that a great number of people following WWII heard stories of Russian Gulags and camps and of the hundreds of thousands who died throuhgout that region and want to believe that this story is true and has greater meaning. One would hope for better things in such a life. Therefore the reader seeks something more from this story, and as it cannot be verified by British Miltary records nor British Hospital records, nor cables from U.S. or British foreign service documents non-classified...one must assume this story is not true, but quite creative storytelling...from the mind of a master.

Not a credible nonfiction

A friend loaned me this book three years ago. At the time, I was reading Unbroken, Flyboys, Bold Spirit, Endurance, and We Die Alone. These were all incredible, but documented stories of the human spirit so I had no reason to disbelieve this one. However, as I read The Long Walk, I began to realize that some of the details were beyond belief and outside the laws of physical possibility – perhaps it just has exaggeration.

There was a lack of some details and some of it was simply physically impossible, but when the author talked about the yeti, I knew that there were gross distortions. Crossing the Gobi Desert without water over ten days – that’s just not humanly possible. He escaped the Soviet gulag with several other prisoners, but no one knows them by name or their final outcome – that is suspect. Perhaps the author was addled from starvation, mistreatment at the hands of the Soviets, or the course of time. Perhaps he had some mild mental disorder that developed at some point. Perhaps the translation from Polish into the English of the ghost writer was misinterpreted. Perhaps the ghost writer took liberties to spice up the content. In any event, the story is riveting and I’m sure that much of it is based in fact. The book, taken as a whole, is well-written and engrossing. I’m sure that it is primarily not a fiction, but it is better appreciated if presented in the genre of a creative non-fiction.

About the Author

Phil Hughes MBE is a well-known UK safety professional with over 40 years worldwide experience as Head of Environment, Health and Safety at two large multinationals: Courtaulds and Fisons. Phil started work in health and safety in the Factory Inspectorate at the Derby District UK in 1969 and moved to Courtaulds in 1974. He joined IOSH in that year and became Chairman of the Midland Branch, then National Treasurer and was President in 1990–1991.

Phil has been very active in the NEBOSH Board for over 10 years and served as Chairman from 1995 to 2001. He was also a Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers for many years and has lectured widely throughout the world. Phil received the RoSPA Distinguished Service Award in May 2001 and was a Director and Trustee of RoSPA from 2003–2010. He received an MBE in the New Year Honours List 2005 for services to Health and Safety. Phil is a Chartered Fellow of IOSH.

Ed Ferrett is an experienced health and safety consultant who has practised for over 25 years. With a PhD and an Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham University, Ed spent 30 years in Higher and Further education, retiring as the Head of the Faculty of Technology of Cornwall College in 1993. Since then he has been an independent consultant to several public and private sector organisations including construction businesses, the Regional Health and Safety Adviser for the Government Office (West Midlands), and was Chair of West of Cornwall Primary Care NHS Trust for 6 years until 2006.

Ed was a member of the NEBOSH Board from 1995 until 2010 and Vice Chair from 1999 to 2008. He has delivered many health and safety courses and has been a lecturer in NEBOSH courses for various course providers. He has been an External Examiner for an MSc course and BSc course in Health and Safety at two UK Universities, a Reporting Inspector for Independent Further and Higher Education with the British Accreditation Council and a NEBOSH Ambassador. Ed is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Member of IOSH.

The lack of discipline cost him his scholarship, now he was back to ground zero again. Addictions began to take over his life. He almost died four times on his young journey, but God’s grace covered him. After getting another chance to play college football, Prim decided to play with a chip on his shoulder. But the season didn’t go the way he expected. At the NFL pro day he didn’t do too well and never received any calls back from any scouts. After that, Edric no longer had the same desire to compete .There was something missing in his soul. He decided to start living for God. He enrolled in Bible College, hungry to learn more about God. Prim show’s how our lives are either a warning or an example to the world. The byproduct of him falling on his face from destructive choices turned out to be the very thing that he used to relate to people who have similar struggles: the struggle to overcome. The book shows Edric’s scars, but he also shares the wisdom he learned throughout his growing process. Your life has meaning, no matter where you’re from. If you manage to get through it without it destroying your testimony, then your life ultimately has substance. You are not too far out gone, your life can change for the better, and you owe it to yourself to attach the right attitude onto those negative mood killers that comes out your way.

I must say, it's been hard for me to turn away from reading it. I'm very impressed. It's very inspiring and humbling. The best thing about it is a lot of people will be able to relate to it. You're the light that came from Loxley. It's good to see where you've come from to where you're at now God is good and he has blessed you with great talent! Great job my friend!!
