Camden 1780: The annihilation of Gates' Grand Army (Campaign), by David Smith

Following the disastrous defeat of John Burgoyne's army at Saratoga, the British were forced to rethink their strategy for ending the American Revolutionary War. A new commander-in-chief, Sir Henry Clinton, was instructed to shift the focus of the war to the southern colonies.
The new theatre brought the British their most comprehensive victory of the war at Charleston, but subduing the entire region was a herculean task, which Clinton left in the hands of his subordinate, Lord Cornwallis. Aware that his small army would be unable to defend the vast area he was responsible for, Cornwallis chose to go on the offensive, seeking out the remnants of organised resistance.
Marching to meet him was Horatio Gates at the head of his 'Grand Army'. When the two forces met, at Camden on the morning of 16 August 1780, Cornwallis won a famous victory and the pacification of the south seemed to be unfolding exactly as planned. Packed with maps and full-colour artwork, this comprehensive account is a vivid portrayal of Britain's last great military triumph of the war.

The road from Charlestown to Camden...
By HMS Warspite
The Battle of Camden in 1780 was supposed to be an opportunity for military glory for General Horatio Gates, hero of the Battle of Saratoga and rival to General Washington. A rare meeting engagement between British and American forces on the night of 15-16 August turned into a set piece fight on the morning of 16 August, in a pine forest near Camden, South Carolina. What happened next determined the fate in uniform of General Gates, and, oddly, put the British Southern Army under Cornwallis on the road to Yorktown.

"Camden 1780" is an Osprey Campaign Series book, authored by David Smith, with illustrations by Graham Turner. The author presents the Battle of Camden firmly within the context of the British Southern Strategy against the rebellious Thirteen Colonies. His narrative includes a detailed account of the siege of Charlestown and the subsequent British campaign to suppress the rebels in the Carolina backcountry. The Battle of Camden itself turns out not quite to have been the instant rout often presented in the history books.

This is a nuanced presentation, full of the challenges for the respective commanders and the difficulties of terrain and a badly divided population. Not least of these challenges, for both sides, was integrating the few available regular troops with a variety of militia and irregular units operating in region. The narrative is nicely supported by an excellent selection of period and modern illustrations, maps, and battle diagrams. Highly recommended as a concise but informative read on the topic.

Grim times for the American Revolution
By Steven Peterson
Any of those books in the Osprey Library. Not terribly long, but good introductions to many different subjects. The focus of this book is the effort by General Horatio Gates to stop the depredations of Lord Cornwallis' forces in the South during the Revolutionary War.

Background: British forces had not been altogether successful in the North by the late 1770s. Saratoga, for example. The Empire was less willing to send large number of troops to the British forces in the colonies/United States. General Clinton, then in command, had difficult choices to make if he were to be successful against the American forces.

One plan that had drawn support was for the British forces to use their mastery of the sea and send an invasion force to the South, where they thought that they would get considerable support from Loyalists. Ultimately, the British captured Charleston, SC--and bagged a large American force that had foolishly stayed too long in that city. A major coup.

Later, Lord Cornwallis took over operations as Clinton returned to New York. With officers such is Banastre Tarleton, Cornwallis cut quite a swath in the South. The Americans realized that they needed to defend the territory and send Horatio Gates (the "hero" of Saratoga) south to command American forces--taking good soldiers with him.

This book describes the gathering of two armies and the grim aftermath of the battle--leaving American prospects looking quite dreadful.

A good work describing the bad times Americans found themselves inin the South. . . .
