Another good example

What a treat it is for the North American market to have the second Gengoroh Tagame book published legally in English! It was printed in Italy in quality paperback format and published by German gay erotic specialist Bruno Gmuender in December of 2013. ENDLESS GAME is a good straightforward example of Tagame's work, although a bit light considering the artist's specialization in BDSM themes. The plot takes us into dom/sub mentorship, penetration, ejaculation, gay group sex, even male prostitution -- elements of pain, humiliation and confinement are there, but not to so great an extent. This makes ENDLESS GAME a good starter volume for gay men and others new to the master. Otherwise, I'd recommend going for The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame: Master of Gay Erotic Manga, more of an anthology of Tagame themes and treatments. It might also be easier to find since ENDLESS GAME is bound to be in short supply, for a while at least. EDITED TO ADD: ENDLESS GAME is presented in manga format. Compared to a Western graphic novel, it is read back to front, and the individual panels right to left rather than left to right, also known as "Japanese R-L." In the event right-hand columns descend opposite multiple left-hand rows, adopt a clockwise swirling scan. You'll catch on quickly, and if you already know yaoi you're home free already.

Very well done and hot erotic comics!

I've seen Tagame's work before, but much of it has been way too extreme for my taste, even repulsive. With this book he takes out all of the S & M elements that were common in his work previously, and this makes the book much more accessible for the average reader. The drawings here are very well done, the storyline is fun and playful, and the sex depicted is hot. I enjoyed this book very much and I give it a high recommendation.

An instant classic from the master

With the publication of The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame and now Endless Game, english-language readers are finally able to hold in their hand(s) the incomparable work of Gengoroh Tagame. Unlike The Passion, Endless Game contains a single story, focusing on a young man's seduction into a world of sex show performances and prostitution. While there are certainly elements of coercion and humiliation, this is very different from Tagame's usual extreme BDSM work. There are no ropes, gags or torture. And in fact, as he states in the included notes on the story, the consensual nature of the sex represents food for thought in considering deeper themes.

Of course the book is enjoyable on less cerebral levels as well. While it might not have the intensity -- often brutal and horrific as it was -- of many of the oneshots in Passion, the sex scenes are prolific, imaginative and explicit. There is a gallery of compelling characters, drawn and brought to life with Tagame's vivid visual style, and filled out with well-translated and sometimes humorous dialog. And as a bonus, two lush color artworks -- more in keeping with Tagame's usual BDSM style -- are included as surprises on the inner covers.

English-language readers are particularly privileged to have access to this book; as Tagame writes on his blog, the work is so recent that it has not yet been compiled and released as a book even in Japan. He has added extra pages, and most exciting, its European publication has allowed its beautiful art to avoid the mutilation by censorship that manga in Japan is subject to these days.

A third english-language publication, Gunji, is planned for a 2014 release.

The subject is fascinating, but the prose is deadly

Don't believe it when they say readable. It is not actually UN-readable, but it is hard to believe any "informed general readers" actually make it all the way through. Which is a shame, since this is a very important subject.

Try "The Return of Depression Economics" by Krugman. It covers most of the same ground, and is extremely informative, but does it in a very readable fashion.

Timely Reading

"Recessions and Depressions" is a gem of a textbook. It's short and lucid, it combines theory and case studies, and it is refreshingly humble about the limits of economic knowledge. Best of all, the discussion of the role played by banking systems in the onset and propagation of downturns couldn't be more topical. Prospective buyers should know that the analysis is organized around various models of the business cycle (Keynesian, Monetarist, Real Business Cycle, New Keynesian, etc.) While the discussion is never mathematical or otherworldly, anyone who hasn't taken a basic econ class might get lost. However, that's to be expected in a textbook. Highly recommended!

Excellent

This is by far the best book I have seen on business cycles. Other books are either too handwavy or too abstract and dry. This book is very precise and comprehensive and at the same time very readable and accessible. It is an excellent blend of theory and real world.

The book explains many theories of business cycles. Some of these theories are widely known, while some I have not seen else where. But all are explained very well.

The book also shows how these theories apply to real world events like the Great Depression, the East Asian crisis, the Argentina crisis, and the Japanese depression. All are excellent case studies.

About the Author

Camara Laye was born in 1928 in the village of Koroussa, French Guinea. He was still in his twenties and studying engineering in France when he wrote The Dark Child. He died in Senegal in 1980.

Memoir of an African Childhood

Camara Laye was one of the first sub-saharan writers to become well-known outside of Africa. "L'Enfant Noir" or "The Dark Child" (also titled "The African Child"?) was published in 1953 when the author was twenty-five and living in France. It is a pleasantly nostalgic memoir of a childhood spent in the town of Kouroussa (French Guinea, now Guinea) and the village of Tindican, his mother's birthplace. Chapter by chapter Camara recounts his childhood memories: his father's work as a goldsmith and his position in society, his parent's magic, village life, the rice harvest, elementary Koranic education, circumcision and young men's secret society, secondary education in Conakry, girls and courtship, and his departure to continue his studies in France. After almost half a century in print, this deserves to be called a classic. [Note: some authorities state that his family name is Camara (also spelled Kamara) and his given name is Laye; the text supports this at one point. If using search engines to look for information on this author it may be useful to try both versions of his name.]

A beautifully textured, fluid and organic autobiography, Camara Laye offers readers a piece of his life in The Dark Child. As part of the Malinke community in Upper Guinea, Laye captures the layered tradition and culture of his community, deemed, perhaps by most, to be simplistic or primitive compared to today's modern standards. Yet it is exactly from Layes descriptions of the traditions of his community that we can begin to understand the psychology of the author. Each chapter is rich with imagery, and his words smack of sincerity and innocence, bringing about an effortless quality and flow to his work--it is as if we are there with Laye experiencing his many transitions, from boyhood to manhood. His descriptions of the communal lifestyle of his people is remarkable. Laye's works like other modern African authors reveal the realities of colonization, and help readers to appreciate and celebrate indigenous African traditions.

It took me a long time to read this book.

I first got this book in junior high by a family friend but never bothered to read it until I entered high school. Not having anything to read, I took it upon myself to read the book. I found myself intrigued by the author's way of life during colonialism and his upbringing in a village and his graduation from high school. It was sad that one of his classmates died unexpectedly. Wanting to find out some more about this author I looked up a book of African authors. Unfortuately he passed away in 1980. He is a great writer and wished that I had read it soon as it was given to me.

Applies in so many ways

Climbing Mt. Everest is not on my to do list, never will be. However I have my own mountians, to me just as big. The Right Mountain clearly illustrated the need to have several things right in order to succeed, from the training in preparation for when the opportunity does present itself to the planning and understanding of each individuals' roles to ensure success. No one gets to the top of Everest without great training, plannning and teamwork, combined with sound decision making.
Having consumed the book I do have a better understanding of how to climb Mt. Everest and the dangers it presents, however I have a much better understanding of process involved in getting me to the top of my own mountain, my Right Mountain. Mr. Hayhurst, thank you for taking the time to share your insights, from your expedition to my own life the requirements are the same, it is clarifying them and understanding them which allows one to implement them.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be in better control of their life, understanding who you are helps, reading this book will help you do that.

best book I've ever read

I'm only 11 years of age but i still am absesseed with climbing mountains. I would never atempt something like Everest but the book still caught my interest. I ate up the book in one night! not only did it teach some really good lessons but it was very interesting reading about this amazing climb in 1988. He draws some beautful metaphors from mountain to life. even if you dont like hiking or climbing this book is a "must-read" This book deserves much more then five stars. you MUST read this book!!

Inspirational!

This book was very different than any other book that I have read on Everest. The author offered very clear insights and lessons that can be applied to everyday life. At first I was disappointed and wanted to return the book, but after reading the first few pages, I appreciated it greatly. If you want a technical book on climbing Mount Everest, this is not for you. If you give it a try, however, like I did, you may learn some very valuable lessons on life. Go for it! Thank you to the author for inspiring others.

It's a very good book. Excellent explanation of each topic and the way it is written is just great. Appart from theory there are also lots of examples which help you understand everything even better. Thanks to this book I found out about many interestnig details about English grammar.a good reference book for advanced students interested in English syntax.

Writing is uneven....but provides important food for thought

I saw the comment on this book made by Martin Tracey and thought twice about purchasing the book. I went ahead and purchase it. I am about half way through it as I write this comment. I was put off by the dismissiveness of Dr. Tracey's comment. I did a Google search on him and discovered that he is a molecular biologist at Florida International University and is quite knowledgible about techniques for sequencing and characterizing DNA. I also know a bit about these techniques myself and about calculating probabilities. That said, I see merit in Dr. Tracey's comment. But I also see merit in the discussion presented the author Erin Murphy. Dr. Tracey's comment is directed towards a surprise experienced by an analysts in the Arizona state crime laboratory. The analysts found that two DNA profiles in the crime lab's DNA database matched at nine places, even though these individuals were unrelated to each other. A further examination of the database revealed 122 sets of such 9-point matches. Dr. Tracey writes that Prof Murphy "ignorantly assumes that the 1 in N odds for a random match to one person, are the same as looking form matches in the entire data base." His interpretation of what Prof. Murphy did is incorrect. Prof Murphy discussion later in the chapter shows that she is well aware of the differences in the probability that a database will contain a match to a given individual versus the probability of finding matches when all profiles in the database are compared against each other. She does this by mentioning the "birthday problem". The birthday problem supposes you are in a group of 25 people. There is about 1 chance in 15 that someone in that group will share your birthday, but there is a very high probability, that two random people in that group will have the same birthday. (In any group of 25 people, there are 300 sets of birthdate comparisons that can be done between any two random people in the group.)

I agree with Dr. Tracey's calculation that in the Arizona Crime Lab Database, there are 2 billion possible comparisons of the DNA profiles between two individuals. And he raises a legitimate question regarding whether it would be unusual to find some matches between profiles. But how many should one expect. Prof. Murphy states that 122 such matches were eventually found. She also states that the probability of finding a random match of two profiles from non-Hispanic whites was estimated at 1 in 754 million. The random match probability between two African Americans was estimated at 1 in 561 billion and between two Southwest Hispanics at 1 in 113 trillion. Given these three estimates of random probability matches, a then perhaps one could expect to find within that database, at most, maybe 3 or 4 matches....WELL SHORT OF 122. One explanation is that the occurrence of particular DNA markers is not as random as the people calculating the probabilities assume. That is, there may be significant correlation in the occurrence of certain markers, and if this correlation is not properly represented in the calculation of probabilities of a match, the calculation gives a misleading result. I cannot agree with Dr. Tracey that the discussion of the Arizona database is silly. Quite the opposite, I find it flags a serious problem and one that has the potential to result in many, many injustices.

I do find the book uneven. For example, Prof. Murphy takes great pains to explain the methodology of DNA typing at a level that a non-technical person can understand. In my view she fails at that effort. But the basic thrust of the book is to argue that the powerfulness of DNA typing is often oversold. She is arguing that the risk of convicting the innocent is much higher than the general public has been led to believe. She cites errors committed in laboratories that have led to their being shut down. She cites failures to follow protocols when adding DNA profiles to databases. She cites the ambiguities that often occur when trying to tease out DNA profiles from samples that contain a mixture of DNA. She cites the persistence of DNA in the environment that can cause confusion as to when the DNA found in a sample was actually left behind. To illustrate this point, she discusses a murder case in which a DNA profile was recovered from a crime scene sample was matched to someone who had been dead for several years. The dead individual was later determined to have been involved in the construction of the building. Then there is the problem of match probabilities that I tried to illustrate above, coupled with the use of software to calculate the probabilities, where the algortihm used to do the calculation is proprietary and is therefore unavailable to mathematicians/statisticians who might want to verify as to whether the software is making correct calculations.

Despite all these issues, Prof. Murphy does not argue that we should throw out DNA evidence. Rather, she argues that we need to have better standards on its interpretation, and we need to reconsider how to calculate the probability that the DNA profile found from a crime scene sample would match that off the defendant on trial. Sometimes Prof. Murphy is inelegant in her discussion. But in my view her central argument has great merit and needs further exploration.

A Revelation

I admit that prior to reading this I accepted DNA results pretty much without question. This book made my hair stand on end and yours will, too. I had no idea just how much can go wrong and how much subjectivity is involved in the interpretation of DNA findings. Very well laid out and a must read if you rely on DNA results of any sort.

There's only one thing better than the truth...the whole truth.

After reading this book I can see why some people in the forensics industry would want to lash out with supposed "science" and "math" to discredit this book. Not surprising. They've used the tiny bit of "science" they learned online at University of Phoenix to dupe juries into arriving at false conclusions resulting in thousands of wrongful convictions for years. This book is not only an accurate depiction of the science behind forensics but also a very surprising accurate depiction of how forensics are actually applied in the real world. There's only one thing better than the truth and that is the whole truth. That's what I got from reading this book.
